My vote is for #3 too. Well done! I can hardly wait to see the prototype.

Differences between 2 and 3: Here are the early sketches of #2 and #3 - this might help illustrate the differences of the arches without the leather tab obstructing the view:

#2

#3 - here the narrower ends of the arches don't line up well with the turnlock, so the leather tab was added to help balance things.

Handles/shoulder strap
:
The rolled handles will have an 8" drop, similar to trophy. Actually this whole bag echoes trophy, you can tell I'm a big fan of it :)

There's also going to be the braided shoulder strap as seen on the biblio bag/trophy satchel. It'll probably be slightly longer for the option to have a single strap instead of double handles, plus it doesn't hurt to have more if you can always detach :P

Leather: The proto will be in classic white James Dean leather (what HH calls their matte leathers) and contrasting eucalyptus for the accents and inverted leather pleating on the side of the front pocket. Joanne was awesome and sent me some swatches:

lol on the owl face I think Kate Spade is making an owl bag this F/W 09. I had a friend mention that the arches on the front flap looks like fask mask and it's kinda scary. That makes it two faces on my bag, hint hint :P

This special bag will be dedicated to my grandmother, and she'll be named, Thanh :)

You mean this fugly kate spade bag. it drops in august. I'm so glad your bag doesn't look anything like this.

I voted for #3 i like the balance of hardware. It looks really put together. I had a really hard time deciding which one was better 2..or...3

oh no!! I actually like towls. Maybe the Kate Spade one looks better IRL? Does anyone remember the Paul & Joe for Target one?? That one was awesome. Thanks for the illustration without the tab.. It helps me see the differences.

This is such an awesome bag! I just love it. It looks like something I'd make if I had the time, patience and means to do it. All the little design influences are right up my alley, and I love the color combo.

Anyway, I voted for 2 and 3. I like the arches, but I don't have a distinct preference between tab or no tab above the turnlock. At first glance though, I slightly prefer #3. I like that the arches taper down. The face that the tab is there to hide that the ends aren't flush with the turnlock doesn't bother me.

^^I like #1 too! It reminds me of a lotus. The other two remind me more of eyes.

I'm not sure if I understand the question. Like, how the handles/shoulder strap is different from the trophy satchel? I think for the trophy satchel the double handle are more for handheld, lower drop.

No, my question is more general...how is this bag different from the Trophy Satchel? Sorry, I haven't read your entire DYOB thread, but I know from what you've posted your design includes Trophy elements and braided handles. It's smaller than the regular Trophy but I don't know the dimensions for either your bag or the Trophy satchel. What are the other differences? Hence my question.

Would love a contrast and compare!

Congrats Misty - great process and progress! I like #2. I see the owl, but I also see a little fox face (the ears are the upper arches).

Thuy, now you know you have a good design. They say the sign of great art is when everyone sees something different in it... lotus flower, owl, fox... its a wonderfully interpretive design.

Syb, although, the Samurai bag may have influences of the trophy - rolled handles, braided strap and applique on a front pocket - that's about it. The handles on this bag are wrapped with leather chord. The top of the bag is a gusseted, framed top with welting. The top is seamed in three sections to give it that curve. And, the two outside pieces appear to widen out. There is alot of structure there that the trophy doesn't have. The trophy's top is a 1" double-thick leather band with a zipper.

Thuy, I like how you have 3 rings to each end of the top zip. It will let you adjust the shoulder strap drop by a couple inches when you want, just by moving down to the next level of rings. Not a choice on the trophy.

Where the trophy is a bowler style bag, the Samurai bag is hexagonal. It is widest midway along its height, whereas the Trophy is widest at its bottom. The depth is different on the two bags also. The trophy tapers from 5.5" thick at the bottom to only about 1.5" thick at the top. That is almost 4" of inward taper. Though I don't have the dimensions of the Samurai, I can tell it has an inward taper of only an 1" or so. The bottom is not too much thicker than the top. Just enough taper to keep its silhouette graceful. The trophy has side pockets - the Samurai doesn't. Also, the Samurai has those wonderful contrast-colored inverted pleats extending from the bottom to the front pocket. Thuy, I am curious about where the pleats stop on the back. Have they discussed this with you yet?

Thuy, I have to say I like your lotus flower applique much better than the upside down oval-shaped center of the applique on the trophy. I am not crazy about the pattern of the applique on the trophy. I don't mind it since it is tonal. But, I think that is the biggest reason why, when I decided I had to sell one of my trophy bags, I chose the tan patent one... because the applique seemed to be more noticable on that one. I also like that the clasp comes off the bottom of your applique instead of in the center, like on the trophy. That way you avoid the brass rivet that has to be set in the trophy bags pocket flap to accommodate the leather buckle. On the trophy that is a somewhat rustic/rugged antiqued brass, whereas the turnlock below it is a dressy, brushed, satin goldtone. That one pecularity is what I notice each time I grab one of my Trophy bags - the two different metals not 3" apart. I think you and HH have addressed this much better on your DYOB.

And, the final big difference is the two-tone leather combination. I have to admit I would love to see a Spring/Summer Trophy bag or satchel in a two-tone "spectator" look - maybe cream/tan, navy/white, and white/euc (like yours). That would be awesome! Or white/chocolate! I saw an ad in Vogue with a Ralph Lauren ensemble. White dress with coordinating white/chocolate spectator pumps and bag. So clean and crisp.

Thanks RMC. I guess I should go find a photo of the Trophy Satchel in the Fall '09 thread 'cause I really don't remember its details at this point. Also, don't recall seeing the back or bottom of Thuy's bag.

Maybe I should just wait for the reveal....then it will be a fun surprise!

Syb, I remember it because I have it as my wallpaper to keep me focused on the Fall release.
