Ooooh I love me some amethyst, how did you guys get to do that? Is it a place open to the public or do you pay to get in and dig your own?
btw asark - I love aquatic life too... As a kid, I dreamt of becoming a marine biologist! And if you ever want some new spooky places to check out you should come to Maryland... There is an old TB hospital that is supposedly haunted, along with an old girls college that burned down. Never been to the TB place, not sure I'd want to, but the college is amazing. I think it was called Saint Marys? It's in Old Ellicott City I believe, if you want to look it up

asark, it's been a few years, so I don't remember.

leo, yes, it's open to the public. You get whatever you put in your bucket weighed and pay for that. I had a LOT, and it wasn't expensive at all. Last year a neighbor of mine put them in his rock tumbler and got them all shiny smooth - I did keep some out, though, because I like the rough cut of some of them. Amethysts give energy and well-being, so you can imagine how it felt to be sitting on top of a mine full of them.

You all can read about the mine I went to here:

Here they are, two of the three (wow, that's not many, is it?) quilts that I've made.

One is the gingerbread wall hanging quilt. That was my first project. It's small, around 4 feet by 4 feet. It was a block exchange. Everyone made 20 of the same block and the next time we all met we all got 19 other blocks to make a different, unique quilt.

The other one is my 'blue jeans log cabin quilt as you go' quilt. This was my second project and there are TONS of mistakes, believe me. But I liked it so much that I'm currently making another one just like it, well a bit different, but you know what I mean.

The third one I made was part of a calendar. I was 'August' and I don't have any pictures of it as all my photos were stored in an old laptop that crashed a few months ago. Anyway, that quilt, along with the rest of the 'year' was auctioned off in November of 2007 at a fund raiser for Children's Primary Hospital in Salt Lake City. My understanding is that people with lots of money go to that and the entire 'year' sold for something like 22k! Other members of the quilt guild did the rest of the year and believe me, their individual months came out 1,000 times better than mine.

Asark: I'm still afraid of the boogeyman and I'm in my 30's!!! I can't even watch Friday the 13th... I am DEATHLY afraid of ghosts (long story but someone scared the crap out of me when I was a kid with a ouija (sp?) board)... I can't imagine chasing the paranormal.... Although my sister SWEARS she has psychic ability and sees dead people sometimes... AAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!.... now I'll never sleep tonight!! Maybe you can tell us a little more about it and help me with my fears..
I'm feeling you on the animal love though..... and I thank you for rescuing... that's a true hero in my book.

h8/Cindy: What beautiful quilts!! And unrelated, I have a mental block when it comes to retaining and rewriting your avatar name!! Do tell - what's the meaning behind it?

I'm such a wimp. I don't think I could go to any actual haunted place. I don't even watch scary movies. And I live in New Orleans, too, which is reputed to be full of haunted houses!

What TWO Thunder Bunnies! Okay, maybe not actually Thunder Bunnies, as in born and raised in Thunder Bay, but close enough considering how relatively obscure Northern Ontario is relative to the worldwide sophisticates who frequent our HH subforum. Brilliant! It is truly a small world.

Thanks so much, Cindy. Your quilts are just beautiful! I especially love the first one with its buttons and notions. My husband and I were travelling on Prince Edward Island last summer and we found a quilt that was made of all brown tweeds and wools. It too had buttons and we really coveted it. Unfortunately it was way over our budget, so we didn't bring it home, but yours reminds of that one so much!

Tell me, how did you get started with your quilting? Did you already know how to sew? Did you join a group? Do you use a machine or quilt by hand? What do you like best about quilting? I'm all ears...

NamkhaDrolma, I got started quilting when I went to a Christmas show/sale thing a few years back. There was a lovely quilt there that was beyond my budget and many of my neighbors belong to the quilt guild here in town. I kinda sorta already knew how to sew and had a 1939 Singer machine that was my mother's. Now these two quilts above were all sewn by machine except for the bindings around the edges, it's attached to the body by machine but the finish work on it is by hand (which I hate to do, I despise sewing on button, hemming things etc.)

The one quilt I didn't have a picture of, the 'month' in the calendar was machine done, by putting it together although there was an applique that was hand done and the quilting had to be done by hand. Like I mentioned above, the rest of the months were very professional looking but my stitches were getting bigger and sloppier as time went on as I do not like hand work. The gingerbread men had to be embellished and my blocks were probably the least so. Mine is the second one, second from the left. Mind you, some of these ladies, quilting is all they do, but I'm not quite that obsessed. I did buy a Pfaff machine which makes my life much easier as the Singer is quite touchy.

Are you familiar with shadowlands. com (at least I think that's it, I lost all my links when my computer crashed a few months back). That's a huge data base for haunted places. Pretty cool reading.

^ I tried to search for it, but all I got was some fishing charters company! Oh never mind - found it. It's .net. Okay, going to freak myself out...
