mlinky....enlighten me slightly if you can...
How much can you get back from consignment stores (in your experience)...been thinking about it ALOT...
ie:...100 dollar jeans...assuming mint condition....
with tags may fetch........?
without tags may fetch.........?
I know no one with experience and I've only heard disheartening numbers like 10 dollars for something worth hundreds....but that can't be true...
What's been you experience if you don't mind sharing..
Thanks!!

chodessa, I'm so sorry it took me so long to respond. I have been felled by a head cold and off-line for a few days.

The consignment store that I work with only takes top quality label items. My experience is that they tend to sell for about 25% of retail, of which I get 1/2 in cash. Some items go for a little more, some a little less. Some items don't sell at all...those must be picked up, or they are donated to a local charity. It is not a good way to make money, but it is a good way to get a few $$ for cleaning your closet. As an alternate, there is a really good resale shop around here that is run by a charity. They give a complete breakdown, item by item, of the donated clothing with a signed appraisal. So taking the tax deduction is an option.

Hey Hotties,

I had typed up a long post introducing myself, but accidentally pressed some key and deleted it all! Anyhow, you probably didn't need to read it all so here's the capsule version:

* Early 40s, married 7 years, two little girls, one cat, 5 fish
* Freelance technical editor/writer, but mostly a stay-at-home mom
* Volunteer teacher of music to K-3 children in local public elementary schools
* Into taiji, yoga, reading
* Most of my bags are HH!
* Current most wanted item: a pair of pants that fit well

Nice to see you all here!

h82bl82, would you be willing to post some images of your quilting? It’s something I really would like to learn and I live just outside a small town with a great quilting store that – would you believe it – I haven’t ventured into yet because I’m afraid I might become addicted. But also, I can’t decide right now between weaving, quilting and knitting. I feel myself on the verge of diving into an all-out textile addiction and am sort of afraid to open the floodgates, if you know what I mean.

indiaink, you said: “One of my personality traits is once I get a thought in my head I tend to act on it immediately”. Well, I’m the opposite. I sits and I thinks for a l-o-o-o-ng time before I do anything, which can be equally annoying to bosses and husbands.

SweetOnPurses, I think your name is so, well, sweet. I’m inspired by your obvious love of your work, being pretty ho hum about mine. Have found myself moving further and further away from doing what I really love. Can you say golden handcuffs?

dcblam, you have such a joie de vivre -
it's wonderful that you've been able to leave the corporate world behind and live a fabulous life filled with art and bags!

Leo/Cassie, congratulations on your new marriage! Marriage is awesome; it’s great being part of a team, isn’t it? Hope you enjoy your new city. Hey, have you posted in the “Your Bag Showcase” thread? I’d love to see your whole fam-damily.

Thanks, chodessa, for starting this thread. I’m pretty reserved in real life, but am definitely better online. (I met my husband online ).

cciele, I’ve done a lot of freelance editing too. Isn’t it a great lifestyle?

So some random tidbits ... 37 years old and ...

Family: My husband of 4.5 years and our two cats, Sapphire and Pearl, who are both from the humane society and loved beyond reason.

Work: I’m (a) “regulatory creep” – those of you working in capital markets or other regulated industries will know what I mean. Basically it means my job is to make sure the firm and its employees are abiding by the myriad rules and regulations governing broker/dealers. Had the opportunity to fulfil my retirement dream when I was in my twenties: founded and ran an antiquarian bookshop in a small book village in the south of France. So now I’m paying my corporate penance, as it were. Trained as an editor, though, and that’s still my first love.

Activities: Love to travel and have visited every continent except Africa – though I’ve not thoroughly explored any of them. Our next trip will likely be a trek across Ellesmere Island, which is in Canada’s far north. To that end I have hired a personal trainer to kick my butt back into shape. Also meditation, reading, film, winter camping (no bugs!), occasional periods of obsessive gaming, ethnic food (eating not cooking).

Home: A converted schoolhouse in farm country, about an hour outside the big city. We have a bell tower but no bell yet. We moved out here two years ago from the heart of the city and it was a bit of an adjustment. Now, I wouldn’t give up the sunsets, the beautiful fall leaves, the rolling green hills, the sweet-smelling fresh air – or even the smell of the dairy farm next door when we are downwind.

Bags: Still learning and I've made a number of mistakes since joining tPF and discovering so many new options. Have always loved bags (the form and function thing), though, and sought the perfect one for each circumstance in which I might find myself, but was never into the designer or higher end items. For me Cole Haan was high end until a few months ago and I still can’t comfortably spend $500 on a bag. That’s changing quickly though as a result of tPF . As for HH, they sneak up on you don’t they? I’d been looking at them online for months, and didn’t really love any particular style. But they are like a slow-release drug working gradually and steadily over time until – poof! – suddenly one of them becomes an absolute necessity (sorry, really bad mixed metaphor). For me, right now, it’s the Clara.

Anyway, blah blah blah ...
You all are so kind and warm and have impeccable taste. What a great place to hang out!

NamkhaDrolma, I sure will post some photos. I will more than likely be heading to Costco today to buy tires (oh joy, what fun!!!)

How fun that you live in a converted schoolhouse. There's a Mormon family (all of them around us are, go figure????) down the street lives in a form LDS church. It is a HUGE home for them.

Darn it, I wish this thread was over at the HH forum. Looks like I'm really behind in reading all the threads.

Well here is a bit about me...

Age: 30
Married: Yes - 4 years
Schooling: Environmental Tech, Fish & Wildlife, Geographic Information Systems
Work: I started in customer service years ago (and found my shoe/bag addiction). I then worked for the government doing enterprise architecture and now, due to having moved to a teeny town, I run my own pet grooming and supply business. DH and I volunteer as animal cruelty agents (so we are peace officers), we run our own rescue, and investigate paranormal phenomenon for fun and for folks with concerns in our "spare time". <- LOL! I can't believe I just typed that! How geeky!!?!!
Coolest thing recent-ish: In June DH and I got to hunt with Jay and Grant from "Ghost Hunters". No, it was not televised - it was a charity auction win.
Travel: I've been all over the US and Canada via automobile. Nothing beats a road trip... or 50, lol! I've baked in the Cuban sun and drowned in the Danish rain... and that is the extent of my wandering.
Collections: Antiques, orchids, accessories (esp. bags!!! DUH!).
HH I'm dying for right now: The Clara flap in black, a Lorca in purple crinkle and a Marcel clutch. Right arm anyone??

I think that may even be TMI!! LOL - please don't hate me 'cause I'm weird!!

I LOVE all of your stories - they are simply wonderful! Thank you all for sharing and inspiring me to share!

Geez, asark, how about I hate you because you've 'drowned in the danish rain'? How COOL is that? Man. <shaking head> I have NEVER been anyplace exotic unless you count sitting on top of an amethyst mine digging for hours (in Thunder Bay CA). And I have the amethysts to prove it!

Is that not the most annoying thing in the world? I used to blog a lot but after that happening to me so many times on blogs that took me hours to write I seemed to have lost interest. I did find, however, that sometimes hitting ctrl+z works to put back everything where it was... But nowadays I just copy long posts before I hit "submit" most of the time. As a freelace writer you've probably tried these before, though
Anyway - nice to know more about you!

Thank you! Anniversary in one hour & counting!
Unfortunately DH is in CA so we'll have to spend it on the phone...
I haven't posted in the bag showcase thread yet, I keep hesitating because I seem to nearly always have a bag coming to me in the mail! I might post there soon, maybe it'll stop me from buying once I can go and see all my bags in one place and realize I like my collection as it is.

Back to you!
I love kitties! Do you know what kind they are?
Congrats on your blossoming marriage as well Are you excited to hit 5 years? That's fantastic.
I have to agree with you that bugs are probably one of the only downfalls camping has. Not sure I could do winter camping, though. My circulation is subpar... You sound like a trooper!
I am so with you on spending $500 for a bag... The most I've spent is around the $150 mark, and I've been here since January so I'd say I'm doing pretty well. I've never really gotten into Cole Haan, what is it you like about their bags? Do you have many? I might be overlooking a great brand!
The country sounds like such a great place to be, & tell us more about your house!!
Great to hear from you, you're super-sweet
