Faf and Gingey... red has GOT to be the most finicky color in terms of getting it right; getting it to work with your skin, all of it... but I'm sure you're both GORGEOUS when it's the right red...
And Cho, you're welcome to head out this a'way! We've got sun to SPARE. And in another month, we'll all be slinking from shade to shade, wearing wide straw hats, all of it. It's pretty intense. Come on over! |

Cho..ITA..serious vitamin D deficiency...and I love the sun even though I am a redhead (born one..now chemically enhanced...albeit badly..)...and last night's deluge was something wasn't it? Quick peek outside, I think I see the sun. I wonder how long it's stay sunny?
Jenni..yup, I am a golden skinned, peach undertone, slightly freckled, honey brown eyed redhead, so I need a very particular shade of red. I get it right when I mix the color myself (I do something called "balayage", I colored my hair a medium gold red and then painted on hilights and lowlights) but as I got older it didn't "grab" for longer than 3 weeks at most and the roots, which are now strawberry colored on their way to white (redhead's don't go grey), show in two weeks. I thought it would be too many chemicals in too short a time frame so I began to get it colored at a salon.. and my "former now retired so he closed his salon in Merrick" got it right using Aveda products.. But now I look horrible because the guy who now (but never more) colored it got it right once, after five tries, and forgot to write down the formula, hence my disaster. ....two months ago, when I went to have it re-colored the first time after it was done perfectly, he put "that weird color" on my roots but the tonal modalities showed on the length of my hair..so I thought "ok he knows what he's doing" ... but this time around for some reason, even though he commented on how amazing my hair looked with its different tones of red and ginger beige blonde (except for the roots) and I specifically asked him when the next time would be to repeat the process...he wound up using a formula on my whole head...deepening the color and then unbeknownst to me he told his assistant to use a colored glaze on top.....when I know I get clear... Amigas..I am so anal that I wrote down whatever he does differently so I could keep a record if he got it right..(not the formula, just his process). I called the receptionist immediately to book time with him so he could see what it looked like...and who was really snotty and told me that he's the expert and maybe if I am not happy I should go elsewhere..I do not take things like that lying down..so I went in and gently gave her a piece of my mind..gently because my DDs & DH get their haircuts there..(PS after seeing the "correction" she admitted that it had been awful).. I went back because I was miserable..and at first he said the color was amazing until I reminded him about what he had done..he looked at my card and told me that it wasn't so..and then I pulled out my planner and showed him the date and the process..he hadn't written it down..and then he remembered what he had done..but not the formula... he then sits me down, and proceeds to put garish highlights in my hair...I had to call someone and tell her that the timer had gone off...so now it's still a deep mahogony/wine/beet color..with brassy gold highlights...not subtle either..chunks..and not around my face where it needed to be lightened..and which I had also pointed out to him..he said it would "carry forward" but when I tried to tell him I don't where my hair parted like that..(which he should know because he also had cut my hair every two months)..I wear it off my face so...the way he placed the highlights, they won't show to frame my face..he was unhappy..and didn't listen..I look better but still horrible..instead of a -0 it's a +2...ucccchh I realized that he's always distracted, usually foists me off on someone else so that he can give his undivided attention to a person who gets a more involved process than I do..that's probably why he forgot to write it down.... ....and then he charged me even though he was correcting his mistake..so I decided to listen to the receptionist's not well meant suggestion..I am not going back there for anything..hopefully my family can still go back..because the cuts are fantastic..I will go elsewhere..or tell the guy that I decided to color my own hair again..we'll see jenni..this is the one time that I am thrilled that red fades quickly because the molecules are larger and leech out of the cuticle..but what is it with these guys? I always bring in tons of photos of what I looked like in every conceivable light source? Thanks for the vote of confidence about my looks..I do feel prettier when the color is right..I wouldn't go as far as saying gorgeous though..(blushing). and cho..I guess I should be happy that it isn't sunny only because the color looks a gazillion times worse in the sun..and now the sun is not showing it's face..I am getting really cranky.. Thanks for letting me rant...I had a huge fight with my older DD last night and I am completely miserable..and feeling guilty even though I wasn't wrong.. XOXO |

I just thought I would stop in and say Hello Hotties!
& ARG!!!!! *mini rant* I'm at my parents house doing laundry and other things. I've really hit a patch of bad luck. Our renovation costs have sky rocketed into a budget realm that I'm not so comfortable with. We budgeted around 8 grand for all the electrical to be revamped and up to code. Which we did in our last house for about 2 grand. With electrical wiring hidden under wallpaper we budgeted more this time. Apparently that wasn't enough. Times our original budget x4.5ish and that is where we are sitting right now. OUCH$$$$$ They knocked down a concrete wall, half wired it up and then politely backed out of the job, full refund. So we had to get a new contractor/electrician ASAP which costed us lots of mulla. This new guy is awesome. He came in and was like the hardest part is done. Let's get to getting your house back together. I'm a little panicy but ever the optimist. When this is done our house is going to be so much more spiffy. After I get over this hurdle of being cash poor I think I can relax and get back to gardening. Thanks for letting me vent Hotties ![]()

I've been trying not to think about hair, because right now I can't walk by a mirror without screaming.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I don't know why finding a hairdresser I can trust should be harder and more traumatic than finding a doctor/surgeon! My hair has been medium length for most of my adult life, except for a brief spell of long straight hair in the sixties and a short curly perm in the seventies, and pretty much the same style for the last twenty years (a rut, I know, but at least a comfortable one). I had one hairdresser for a good part of that twenty years, until he and his wife decided to go build a log cabin in Wyoming and watch bears in their back yard. After a few tries I found a new hairdresser to pretty much duplicate the cut. I got through the stage (age fiftyish) when half of my hair fell out and the texture of the rest changed, had some surgery a couple of years ago when a lot more of it fell out (fortunately only temporary that time because I really couldn't spare any more), and have been fairly calm about the gradual color change to a kind of patchworky gray.About a year and a half ago I decided it was time for a short haircut, and found out that that was not my hairdresser's area of expertise. I moved on to another hairdresser, and her first two attempts were not stellar either. I thought maybe I wasn't doing a good enough job at describing what I wanted, and I'd never really found a good picture of a hairstyle I liked (do any real people have haircuts like the ones found in those hair magazines????). Two days ago I went to my latest appointment feeling more hopeful than usual. I had happened to see a Cover Girl commercial with Ellen deGeneris? and I loved her haircut. It looked really easy and casual, which probably means it took an entire staff several hours to achieve, but still.... Google found several still pictures from the ad, so I printed them off and took them in with me. My hairdresser glanced at the pictures (a little too quickly for my peace of mind), and said now she understood exactly what I wanted. Unfortunately, I'm pretty much blind without my glasses, so I couldn't really see what she was doing until it was much too late. I now have a large clump of longish bangs, short hair in the back, and damned near a crew cut on the sides! One side is even shorter than the other, but I was afraid if I asked her to even it up I'd end up with no hair at all. I'm naturally frumpy and totally not stylish, and I don't have the confidence to walk into an upscale or trendy salon so I don't know if that would be an improvement. I guess I have plenty of time to think about it, because it will be several months before I even have enough hair to do anything with. Sorry for the long rant. It doesn't even have anything to do with bags, although I've been seriously wondering which one I could wear over my head. |

yesiree stormy, ITA and that is why whoever is in charge of the universe made hair grow most of the time....because that power that be also created bad hairdressers...and also milliners. ![]() disco...I'm your age, went through a similar thing with hair, cancer, "change" at 39 due to the first, etc) bad bad haircut last January from shoulder length to something with a spikey top and layered sides and back that looked like a mullet...(same guy above wanted to get "creative" ) and it all grew back to a certain extent. No need to wear baseball caps. Is there a Walmart near you (surely there is) because that store has some fun hats (not floppy brimmed ones either). REI catalog and Kangol make some really fun ones, caps, berets, dutch boys, newsboys in cotton, linen and even straw. (Plus they will also protect your face from the sun.) Surely there has to be someone else you can go to..although even here in a NYC outer boro they seem to be few and far between. |

Disconnected, SO sorry about your bad cut! Gingey and Stormy are right. Time heals, but a GOOD stylist (and a good hat!) can speed up the process. Sounds like you should definitely find someone nearby to at least fix the unevenness, while it grows out. I've always had good luck at Aveda salons, since they go through extra training. I think haircuts are one area where you really do get what you pay for... higher end salons have better trained and more experienced stylists.
Stormy, they're on their way!! Mine usually arrive first week in May, so they're right on schedule. We've got three who use our one feeder, and they've all got rock star names: Bowie, Mick, and Janis. |

Oh, man, disconnected, I have so been there. You are not alone!
A good stylist who really knows how to cut your particular type of hair is worth their weight in gold. And don't worry about an "upscale" salon-- you will see all types in those places. They are happy to have your business. My strongest recommendation is that you pluck up your courage and when you see someone with a great haircut, ask them who did their hair. They will be flattered and you will give them a boost. You could also check at www.naturallycurly.com, they have salon reviews. Granted, they are based on how well they cut curly hair. What I think that means, though, is that the stylist is willing to learn new techniques and listen to their customers. It's worth a look, anyway. http://www.naturallycurly.com/curlsalons |

OMG......I just had a blast reading everyones post.....
from jenn as a blonde bombshell (so, are you still diggin it???) gb with her words of comfort and comedy and cho-mama going through sun withdrawl (I'm right there w/ya sista......I'm so TIRED of all of this RAIN RAIN RAIN!!!! - ugh!) and lulu.....yes, it does get under your skin....construction never goes smoothly - and is always more expensive even with padding your budget.....UGH to the max....BUT in the end, it will be well worth it....just ride out the bumps and it seems like you found the right guy and the wrong guy was "man" enough to tell you that he wasn't the "right" one for the job - thank goodness!!! dis - so sorry about your hair......just don't look in the mirror! LOL.......and I really laughed at Stormy's post - sometimes, you have no alternative than to react with humor! it will grow and I can completely understand because a BAD short haircut is WAY TOO NOTICEABLE, yes? Do yourself a favor and go "interview" some salons - I know it takes time, but may be worth the effort, yes? Find someone who really KNOWS how to cut short hair. Also, if you see someone with a cut that you like - it doesn't have to be your style, but if the CUT looks good (and of course, it has to be a short cut), ask them where they get theirs cut......(or, did I not pay close enough attention to your post???? - if so, pls. forgive). Me.....I just say color and cut - do whatever.....but I found a great guy to do my hair. Think I may go a bit lighter this Summer.......or reddish????? I'll just say - do what you want....... It did take a couple of cuts for him to know that I really did WANT short short hair.........most stylists are too afraid/timid for fear that their clients will not be happy. Okay...enough dribble here too.... |

Thanks everyone, for the empathy and advice. I feel quite silly, because I do know that a haircut is pretty unimportant in the grand scheme of things.
![]() Stormy, I will go look at some hats. I've never worn them much, partly because of the hat-hair thing, but I guess that's not a problem now . I've already been trying on scarves I haven't worn lately, pulling them up higher and higher to cover the space where hair used to be.Gingey, I think I'm several years older than you, but yes, some of the same experiences, including a mullet sort of cut, and the cancer -- hopefully an isolated instance -- just had my two-year post-surgery PET/CT scan, so far, so good -- need to keep the bad hair in perspective.jennirane, I think there are some Aveda or Aveda-related salons near me, so I'll look into them in a couple of weeks, after I get back from a vacation (a cruise, where at least I won't run into anyone I know). fafnir, thanks for the link; I'll look at that too. It's funny, in the past I've never had the nerve to ask a stranger where she got her hair cut, but in the past couple of days, when I might have been desperate enough to ask, every other woman I see seems to have a version of my current haircut! Most of them have been executed somewhat better, but still! It must be the cut that stylists are trained to give women of a certain age. ![]() dcblam, you're right about not being able to disguise a bad short cut. I think I tend to hide behind my hair, and now there is nowhere to hide. In your pictures, you always look so chic, you can probably make a "mistake" haircut look like an enviable new style. I love your mirror advice -- will start by covering all the mirrors in the house.

Dis, It sounds like she gave you some kind of asymmetrical short do,which are really in. I totally understand not feeling like the haircut is you. Fortunately short hair tends to grow super fast and you may end up loving it in a few weeks. I'm a hairdresser and it always pisses me off when I see people bring fellow stylists pics and they glance for one second and then do their own thing. I sit and stare at that pic inside and out to get all the little details. Anyway, Play around with it a little. It will look like a totally different cut in a few weeks and you can tweak it from there.

ITA..great advice. SDNikki..glad you correborated that there are some hairdressers who pay attention while others just pretend to. Thanks for giving me hope because I am just about ready to grow my hair long, braid it in two braids and wind it around my soon to by uncolored head.
Disconnected: Hair does grow back but I hope the cancer never rears its head again...and don't cover the mirrors because in the Jewish religion as well as in many others it's done in a house of someone in mourning. Bad karma amiga. Just stare yourself down and say to yourself: I am hot, bad short hair or not and this haircut will soon be forgot! (OK..it's bad but I mean well, waddya expect when I'm tired and crabby). toni..thanx again for your good wishes. My mom was her usual self. I just don't have the energy to go into it now. She didn't answer the phone for me but did speak to my kids when they visited. I am now wondering if she is OK and I know I will wind up going over there with my keys in hand first thing in the morning. XOXO |
