In April 2005 I went to Italy and came home with a love-at-first-sight Furla. Because I do nothing in moderation, the idea of a fab collection of bags snowballed quickly, and here I am, made worse by the constant introduction of more new things to love on tPF.

i agree, great thread!
i received a coach bag for my high school graduation, but never used it and ended up letting my college roommate use it instead. then i discovered marc jacobs two years ago through a friend and there was no turning back. i spent more then i ever thought i would on a bag when i saw the MJ chevron bag (my avatar). about a year ago, i discovered TPF and my bag obsession has sky rocketed. i was introduced to so many designers i've never heard of (gustto, gryson, botkier, etc.) and i have also developed an appreciation for the classic designers (chanel, bottega, fendi, YSL). i have bought more bags in the past year than in my entire life! i'm at the point now where i have to really pare down my collection and wishlist to the must-haves. but it's so tempting when i browse TPF! we are definitely enablers, but at the same time, i love that there's such an understanding community here! |

When I was 17-18. I got my first designer back when I turned 18. A LV pouchette. And then I got a Gucci purse for my graduation present 6 months after that. And that's how it is. However, I've never been so obsessed since i moved to the U.S since everything is so easy to get here!! But actually I really liked and collected purses since I was 15, just not designer purses. TPF really made my buy..everything I could get my greedy lil hands on!

If you ask my mother I have loved handbags since I was a small girl.
However as I recall i was about 10 or 11 when I purchased my first bag, nothing designer just a nice style. As i got older mid-late teens I was drawn to certain style bags which i purchased which I know know were inspired by chole (paddington) or different monogram styles (LV) or certain prada styles. I have been wanting to purchase a designer bag for nearly seven years, but have been unable to due to finances and completing university. But as soon as I begin my first professional job, within the next few months, you can bet the first thing I will do is start saving money for a bag. Now just to decide which one

Oh, I've always liked bags, but the real obsession started maybe two or three years ago when I hit one too many outlet malls in the US

I've always loved purses, even as a little girl, but have never owned anything better than Nine West or Guess. My designer obsession started when I read a little book called Handbags - What Every Woman Should Know by Stephanie Pedersen. It's the history of bags with lots of pictures and anecdotes. Then I went on a vintage bag site and found a bag that looked exactly like one I loved in the book (Whiting and Davis circa 1900 mesh enamel evening bag) for $50 (but I'm nervous about buying stuff on the Internet so I didn't get it). Then I found this site and was truly hooked!

Elementary school for me. I'm 35 now so it was quite a long time ago. I remember saving up money for my first liz claiborne and then dooney after that. I next got hooked into coach and it has been down hill or up hill after that.... LV, gucci, chanel, balenciaga, etc.

My bag obsession began when I 18 years old. My aunt came from London and stay with us for a few weeks and all she wore was Gucci and Louis Vuitton hand bags. From there I was in love with bags.

When I was a small kid, my grandmother would bring me little purses every time she traveled
...I had (still have some of them) quite a unique collection. Those were not designer of course, but that was the beginning!

It's a total relief to hear from others who are as obsessed as I am. My husband thinks I'm crazy and most friends tell me "I would never spend that much on a purse!"
