I had a bag once with fake fur, but like some of you, I wouldn't buy a real fur bag either.

Good choice.

The only thing that concerns me about vintage exotics (and fur, for that matter), though, is that onlookers might not realise it's vintage and may think one is carrying a new exotic (and therefore, may think it's OK for them to do so, too)...

I have a genuine Art Deco snakeskin clutch, which I bought because I absolutely loved the design (it has an egg shaped clasp!) and hoped to have it remade in really good quality, faux snakekin; but I have never felt I can carry the original, for that very reason.

I've also begun to worry about really good faux for that reason, too - as if it is really convincing (which it can be!), people may just assume it's real and then be inspired to go out and buy a real one, themselves...

If all new fur and non by-product, cruelly produced/killed exotics were universally banned, with huge penalties for those who broke those bans, we would all then be free to enjoy vintage fur and exotics (and convincing-looking faux), because no one would assume it was new and/or real.
Your points are well taken. Luckily I am not a trendsetter and the vintage exotics I have are distinctively old fashioned looking. I myself look very vintage (not so luckily). I don't think about what others think of me. I know my choices are ethical and compassionate. I do not accept responsibility for the decisions and choices of others.

I so agree with your statement.

I saw a bunch of fur bags at TJ Maxx as well. They were from an obscure Italian brand. I don't normally have a problem with fur bags, but these were ugly. They were pieced from mink strips that came from very rough, poor quality pelts. They looked terrible.

Skanky & skunky lol! Yea it's pretty bad! Sometimes I think that designers think that we'd buy ANYTHING as long as it had their name on it lol! I edited my post for anyone else who wants to see this nasty looking purse, they can just click on the link.

I always wondered if this would be considered fur? And what exactly is pony hair?

This is a Gucci Pelham made of pony hair.

Here's another link: http://www.bagsnob.com/2008/10/what_...calf_calf.html

There were a lot of questions regarding ponyhair, haircalf or in industry terms, hair-on leather. What the heck is it? Is it pony? Is it cow? Well, it is most commonly cow, although it can be done with buffalo or any other animal for that matter (shearling is the sheep version of this) but it is usually not actual pony. Basically, it is the hair side of the animal. It is considered a "pelt", same as fur. The leather that we are most familiar with is actually the underside, the non-hair side of the skin. Haircalf (the most common term but in fashion pony hair is used to make it sound sexier) is more expensive than the average leather but the cost is in the finish of the hair, since it needs to be treated (chrome tanned is a process that gives the hair the super shiny sheen), most of the time it is cut down short (this is necessary for any use other than a rug, as in, in a cowboy's house), and it is dyed.

As a horse lover, let me find out that a pony hair bag is actually made from real pony & you'll see me go off like a like a Roman Candle! I don't know why they'd call cow hide bags "pony hair" in the 1st place because you'd think that name would scare consumers off! At least I eat beef. Anyone see that movie No Country for Old Men? The air device that Sugar had that was an air gun with a large nail that shoots out the end then retracts abrubtly is what they use to humanly kill the cattle by shooting them in the head quickly & painlessly. This what my hubby told me as his best friend used to work in the slaughter house in Amarillo TX which is the 2nd biggest SH in the country & the 4th largest in the world. No part of the cow is wasted btw.
