I don't know - there was a really cute mink chanel -

My problem is - it would be irritating enough to send my coats into a 3 mo. cold storage. Would I want to have a bag out of commission that long?

Also, why should my handbag get a 3 mo vacation when I don't?

It can look lovely, even faux fur is done well by some designers. I wouldnt buy real fur though.

...and before anyone says that leather's the same as fur - it really isn't, as most animals that are killed for their fur are killed only for their fur (i.e. the pelt is not a by-product of the food industry, as most leather is) and also, most of them are killed in an especially cruel way, to preserve the pelt.

The same goes for most exotic skins (ostrich and fish skin would be exceptions).

Of course, some leather isn't a by-product, either and/or the animal has been killed in an especially cruel way, but it's far less common.

*thumb up* ITA. Big, big difference.

Oh, and the thread topic bag is ugly, and it's not the fact that it's got fur, fake or not. I mean...I believe it can be well done. The design alone is what I'm speaking of.

It is such an emotionally charged issue as is any that may hint at the suffering of others for the sake of a passing fashion fancy. We get the same way about replicas, as those that manufacture them are often unscrupulous. We have tender hearts. Outcries will continue.

Personally, I feel fur looks tacky on a handbag, fake or real. The one pictured is ugly, fur or no. My exotics are vintage, some almost 100 years old. It is a choice I made.

Yes, exactly.

Well said.

Good choice.

The only thing that concerns me about vintage exotics (and fur, for that matter), though, is that onlookers might not realise it's vintage and may think one is carrying a new exotic (and therefore, may think it's OK for them to do so, too)...

I have a genuine Art Deco snakeskin clutch, which I bought because I absolutely loved the design (it has an egg shaped clasp!) and hoped to have it remade in really good quality, faux snakekin; but I have never felt I can carry the original, for that very reason.

I've also begun to worry about really good faux for that reason, too - as if it is really convincing (which it can be!), people may just assume it's real and then be inspired to go out and buy a real one, themselves...

If all new fur and non by-product, cruelly produced/killed exotics were universally banned, with huge penalties for those who broke those bans, we would all then be free to enjoy vintage fur and exotics (and convincing-looking faux), because no one would assume it was new and/or real.

Speaking of furry handbags, here's a true story:

Three years ago I attended a Holiday/Christmas party thrown by one office/floor of a large and successful company. One of the highlights of the day was a White Elephant gift-exchange with the stealing of gifts. A woman opted not to steal, and instead chose and opened a beautifully gift-wrapped box. As she pulled out sheets of glittery tissue paper--and I mean SHEETS and SHEETS of tissue paper--everyone ooo'ed and ah'ed in anticipation of seeing what item was so carefully wrapped.

She finally worked her way through the tissue paper and pulled out . . . a furry black purse dangling from a gold chain. While she held it up and stared at it in shock, everyone at the party burst into laughter, men and women alike. I felt terribly embarrassed for her, even though she took it in rather bewildered stride.

Now that the holidays are approaching, I recently heard that the infamous White Elephant is still remembered by everyone in that office. BTW, the gift-giver and champion gift-wrapper remains anonymous, but I'm told that no one has ever topped that gift for its shock value.

For information on White Elephants: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_e..._gift_exchange

I think if it is done tastefully...but I really don't feel like dropping $$$ on a bag I won't be able to carry yr round especially in Florida.
