Default What happens to bags that were on display?
I was just wondering, what happens to premium designer bags that were on display? I bet they are eventually worn down from handling and etc. Are they sold eventually? If they do, with discounts? Do SAs tell customers that they were on display or do they just not say anything as long as customers don't ask? What is the fate of those displayed bags? I was thinking, if I'm paying $$$ for my dream bag, I want to make sure i get a brand new bag..

Also, I was wondering, what happens to bags that are returned? If the customer never uses it and returns it within few days, it is still brand new.. But you know sometimes the customer can use it few times and return it since stores have very relaxed return policy these days.. Are they sold as nothing ever happened?

all the bags are eventually sold.. displays, returns etc. it depends on the company whether there is a discount (i've never bought a display so i'm not totally sure..) and whether or not they tell the costumer. i've probably bought returns before, but i look over my bags VERY carefully and have never found even the slightest sign of usage on any of them.

i don't think that stores have a very relaxed return policy these days, most SAs check the bags over thoroughly before agreeing to the return.

I bought a Gucci bag once. It was the last bag (on display). It was flawless but when I brought it home and tried it on my husband disliked it so I ended up returning it. I would imagine if the bag showed any wear whatsoever, they would probably discount it a small percentage. In this case the bag was perfect, just was a short shoulder strap for a large size bag, and my husband felt it had an uncomfortable appearance.

They are often discounted or sent to outlets.

Depends on the store - if it is in good condition, Nordstroms, Macy's and Neimans all sell it online for full price (or whatever the sale price is)
Nordstroms and the stores from the May Co. also have an outlet for those which haven't survived quite as well called Last Chance - it's like the Rack's Rack - and it can be somewhat dingy and trashed. You can find some good deals, however.
Also, sometimes the returns and display bags go to the outlets (if the store has one), TJ Maxx or Marshalls, (rarely) an employee store, or an annual or biannual Sample Sale.
Several premiere stores destroy any damaged floor models.

When I was at the Prada store, I had the feeling that they put bags on display, sell the display, and then bring out a fresh bag for display. I don't know for sure, but that was the impression I got.

to be honest the display issue is one i have not encountered much in europe but moreso in the US. customers are much more picky whereas here a display bag is just like any other bag. it stays on display for a very short period until it sells and then the next one goes up :)

unless it is actually damaged there are no discounts.

When I purchased a Vernis makeup case at Palo Alto, the SA gave me the display model at full price. She said it was the last one they had in stock. I looked it over and thankfully it was in good condition.

I think it really depends on the brand. I've purchased may display bags from LV, Chanel, Coach, etc. and they were all pull price. I never had issues wit any of them.

i think they just sell all the ones in the back/extra stock and then eventually just the display is left and that gets sold too. if it's beat up/damaged/looks worn or dirty, then likely it'll just sit there until mark-downs and eventually someone will want it. if not, goes to the outlets.
