Default Suggestions for a black tote?
I know this question has been asked in one form or another about a million times, but wanted to throw it out there with my criteria...

Black, soft leather, zip top, tote, large enough to carry laptop...any thoughts? $300 range

If you want something to carry your laptop I'd say look at Tano or Longchamp for your price range.

size: 16 1/2"L x 10"H x 5 laptop should fit no problem.

you might be luck to find one at a sample sale or eBay cheaper.

Fits the criteria except for the zip top. I use this for my laptop. It's by Corrente.

My laptop is about 13 by 9. It also comes in blue:
