Default Someone Asked me to Donate a Handbag

One of my teachers at my dance studio asked me to donate a handbag for their fund raiser. I was shocked! I told her I'd prefer to make a monetary contribution, and she didn't understand. She said, what's the difference?

OMG, my bags are irreplaceable. Of course, I will be more than willing to give money to the fund, but not one of my handbags! I'm sure you ladies understand my feelings, even though she was totally dumbfounded at my response.

That is so strange unless they are doing some sort of rummage sale. Maybe they thought you have some inexpensive knock about bags to donate. Do what you are most comfortable with.

Wow, that's a bit forward! Not very nice of her to put you on the spot. I mean, would you grab someone's hand and say, "How about donating this ring?" And the fact that she said, "What's the difference?" is extremely rude in itself. IMO, you were very gracious to offer a monetary contribution instead. Sigh...Some people are like school in the summer...no class.

I most certainly would not donate a bag from my collection but if a bag is what they wanted, I'd go to TJMaxx or Marshalls and get an inexpensive one to donate.

That seems a bit rude... Did she ask everyone to donate handbags or only you? If they are specifically collecting "handbags only" as donations... I guess I would just buy a handbag for whatever amount you are comfortable donating...

I wouldn't be willing to donate one of my purses - I am very attached to them. I think she sounded very ungrateful regarding her response when you offered to make a monetary contribution instead. It seemed very insensitive.

tonij2000 made a very good suggestion to go to TJ Maxx/Marshalls to buy a few inexpensive bags for donation.

And oh yea... the "difference" is that it is YOUR donation and therefore YOUR choice!

I don't know for sure if she (or the dance school) asked anyone else to contribute. She asked me in private after class. She said they were going to do a fund raiser soon and she thought it would be a good idea if I would donate a bag from my collection. I was so stunned that all I could think to say was that I would rather give them money (and I will).

I have a feeling she wanted it for a silent auction or something like that, but I couldn't even get the words out my mouth to ask what she planned to do with it.

I think this is just crazy! I'm so glad you all understand my point of view.

I think it's a really bizarre request! I mean if someone wants to fundraise for something I think it only polite to do a general announcement or give out a circular and then leave up to you to decide what you want to give if anything. I have donated jewellery and handbags (none of which were very exciting or expensive) for a stall my mother was holding in order to raise money for a church extension, but it was more a case of "...if you've got anything you don't want, that's in reasonable condition, and you wouldn't mind...etc." You should never feel pressured. I think you were more than generous offering to make a monetary donation. I'm sure she's only too aware that you have lovely bags .... maybe she thinks she'll pick up a bargain, or is that me being too cynical...?

I think it's rude of her to ask you that. Either buy an inexpensive bag to donate or just tell her that you'd prefer to give a monetary donation.

That's what I was thinking... I hope not though... That would be very tacky...

What a weird thing to ask. Don't think she is into bags at all if she asks that.
