Default Michael Kors and Michael by Michael Kors bag - is the quality that different?

Both lines have nice models, both seems to be well made but prices are 3-4 times different. Why is it? Marketing strategy?

It's like Marc Jacobs and Marc by Marc Jacobs. I think they just want to create a line that's more affordable for those who can't spend $800+ for a bag. I say it's a marketing strategy to cover all target audiences.
