I have this bag arriving today from Cole Haan. It's so beautiful...completely sold out in this color, so I had to grab it.

I'm just worried it's going to be too big. Do you consider 18" wide big?

What do you consider a big bag?

Ah yes, to me that would be big! LOL But then I don't care for huge bags - I prefer around 12 " wide but will go as far as 14". I consider
my preference in sizes to be 'medium'.

To me big bags start at about 18 inches. Anything between 13-17 medium, anything less is small.

for me i think it depends on what size your use to carrying

I don't think that bag size can be measured by inches. I believe the size of your purse depends on several other factors.
1. Frame size of person carrying it
2. How the person carries the bag
3. Is it really north/south - east/west etc.
4. How much stuff you put into the bag

I think it takes all of these variables to determine if a bag is "big" or not. Me, I love huge bags, and probably will never carry a small bag again.

I saw that bag at Saks yesterday on sale. Can't remember the price, but it was 30% off the original price. It did seem a little big for me, and I am 5' 4". But, I am used to carrying nothing over 14" either.

IMO, it's relative to your frame. Looking at someone from the side, I'd say that:

small = not more than a couple inches wider than the largest part of the body

medium = not more than a couple inches wider from knuckle-to-elbow (so it doesn't look much larger than your arm when you're holding the bag against your side)

large = anything larger than medium

I have the bag now, and I am sad to say...it is too big for me. Also, its' horizontality is too extreme. I am tall and slim, and the bag is wide and slim.... it looks awkward. I am so sad, because I love the bag....going back to Cole Haan.

Sorry you had to go through all that trouble, but quite honestly, when I picked it up and carried it around a bit, I felt like I was headed directly for the gym.

I don't know..I carry lots of bags (which are probably considered big) but I think it's normal. Although my husby always asks why am I carrying luggage so...it depends on the person.

My local store did a send sale from another store... I feel guilty bringing it back, but they didn't have it to try on. I hate returning stuff! Oh well, I have learned that I just don't like big bags.

Oh, don't worry about returning it. That kind of stuff happens every day in retail world. You'll get something else that you will like even better that suits you.
