How do you react when people ask how much your bag cost?

Just curious if this is a faux pas for some of you. It is for me. I'm not the type to talk about money or try to show off or anything I'm a modest mouse (the band is great too esp. their older stuff) but anyways bc yesterday at work one of my co-workers was talking about an ex co-worker I never met who had a bag addiction. I was like I do too most of the time

She was asking me how much my purse was and I didn't really want to go there but she kept asking so I just finally told her and she freaked out her eyes got really big

and she was like OMG!!! How can you spend that much on a purse !!!

It made me REALLY uncomfortable at first and then I was like you know what I work hard for my money and I choose to spend it on whatever I wish. She was like I know but isn't that excessive? And it would be excessive if I used my entire earnings to go out and spend a few grand on bags everyday but I don't I pay my bills first and put some aside for savings and what I do have left over I use for whatever and sometimes it is to purchase bags. Plus for me they are investment pieces. I pick classic styles that I can wear 5-10 yrs. down the road plus I like to give my bags I don't wear anymore to my sisters and mom so its kind of like heirloom lol and a recycle center bc sometimes the bags come back to me

!

And this isn't the first time this has happened to me. Just curious what your thoughts, experiences and reactions are?

I really don't like it when people ask, it's just uncomfortable, like asking a lady her age!
One girl came up to me at a party a few weeks ago and asked me 'Where I got my bag from?' (she clearly didn't see VERSACE written on it, bless) so I told her and she was like 'Oh, okay then' and never talked to me again?!
I didn't even get to tell her how much it cost!

No one has ever asked what my bags cost. Looking at me, I think everyone assumes my bags are the real deal (they are) and that they cost a lot of money (which is also true).
The only person who knows is my husband

If someone were to ask, I would politely tell that person and let it go at that.

You could always say, "Oh, I thought it a long time ago, I don't remember!" or "It was a gift."

For me, if someone asks that, they know what they are getting into with that question, so I have no problem telling them straight up.

i always say..i don't remember but i know i got it on sale. it sux but i don't feel comfortable telling anyone. its no ones business

I hate when people ask. It's rude (IMO). I know they're just going to freak when I tell them anyways.

Yeah I usually don't tell either I just tell them I'm sorry I don't remember but she was a co-worker and we have a pretty open relationship and she was REALLY curious I didn't expect her reaction to be like that but then there's no way of me knowing she would react like that anyways.

Another question do you guys react the same way to your close friends and family?

Maybe my super close friends I wouldn't be so hesistant but I still feel kinda of like its not their business but with my sisters and mom they know how can I hide it when we are shopping together! But yeah I keep it from my dad bc he will lecture me on that plus he's a guy he just doesn't get it no matter how many times I explain it to him I just let him guesstimate and plus I don't get how he can go out and spend like a few grand on a saw blade table or whatever and lecture me bc I only remember him using that thing a few times and I use my bags a million more times than that (well not exactly but you get what I'm saying

I just say something to the effect of, "I'm sorry, I don't feel it is appropriate to talk about the cost of these things" or "Isn't that a rather rude question to ask?"

I don't like talking about money with people in that way.

I just tell them my sugar daddy bought them for me. Love the reactions I get then they shut up and I move on!

I haven't had anyone ask me how much they were, but if they did, I would totally say something to distract from it, and say I got it on sale or something like that.

I get real uncomfortable when people ask me how much my bags cost. If I know the person well enough, I tell them how much it was even though it's none of their business. If I don't know the person real well or if I know they'll flip out over the price, I tell them I don't remember or just say, "you really don't want to know" and continue doing what I'm doing.

I have the same problem with my co-workers lately. They ask just to be catty, rude, and just plain nosy. It's nobody's business, imho.

I don't answer the amount as that is "nyb". I sometimes say sales since a few of my purses were purchased on sale.

If it's a close friend I tell them, that only includes about 3 people. Strangers, I just say, something like "too much, but I only buy 2-3 purses per year", and leave it at that.
