Default High End Bags for School??

I am curious about something that sems to be a growing phenomenon around the forum: ladies buying high end bags for school use. I wanted to know what makes people decide to do this. I suppose my confusion comes formt he fact that I only associate school with heavy, dirty books...something I would not want to put in a high end bag of ANY kind. It seems to me that using these bags in a school setting, even without books would result in them getting dirty and/or damaged. So ...what makes you want to use high end bags for schol, and do you ever worry about the possible damage that could be done? Akso, is it over-the-top to carry a high end bag to school?

im with you I totally do not understand the need for a high end bag as a book bag. I mean I still use my messenger bag from when I was in middle school (its my last year in college). Its still in great condition and I love it so why shouldnt I use it. I also dont have to worry about it getting dirty or if something happens to it I wont have a heartattack.

Its become the norm at my college to carry around a real (or fake) designer bag. I just switched from my messenger bag to my Coach Hamptons weekender (which I began using my senior year of high school!) because I feel it looks more age-appropriate, and more convenient than carrying a handbag and my binder. I don't see mine as being over-the-top, especially because its plain black, and I just clean it with a baby wipe if it gets dirty, and while I'm at school I put it on the chair next to me, which many other girls do with their bags.

And I only buy new books (the used price at my school is the same as getting it from Barnes and Nobel with the member discount), I treat them very well so they don't get dirty.

It's definitly become the norm at my mid western college as well to carry more expensive book bags to class. Well it's either that or to carry bags with your sorority letters on them. Personally I do carry a "higher-end" bag for my books, (a Coach black leather tote bag) and in all honesty I continue to carry it because it is a bag that has not crapped out on me yet. And I've been using it since high school as well. All my other bags/backpacks/messenger bags/etc. have all busted or pulled zippers or what have you within a few months of abuse. So I guess in a weird way I see it as doing myself a favor and saving money because I am not having to constantly replace a backpack.

And yeah, my bag does get a little dirty, but for the outside all I do is wipe it off with a baby wipe and for the inside I just use one of the Tide To-Go pens or Shout wipes and then I'm good to go.

I see a lot of fakes around campus. Not horrid fakes, but fakes nonetheless. Some of these girls have full knowledge that their bags are fake too.
I personally prefer a backpack because I have lots of books that are generally huge and I'm also carrying my laptop. When I'm attending a one hour lecture knowing that I'm not going to take that much notes, I may consider bringing one of my designers. But most of the time, I tend to feel like a snob if I do. I can't shake that feeling off. I guess it's because most students (including myself) are broke or semi-broke from inflating tuition fees. You go to school to get an education, it's not a freaking fashion show like some girls view it as. At the end of the day, I think it's for attention.

gosh I am so glad I didn't have this pressure when I was at university...the most with bags was having a Liz Claiborne triangular print bag of somesort. Mine cost about $80 or so...a big splurge for a poor student back in the day, LOL! I had a no name leather tote from Mervyns for most of my books as I recall (this was prior to carrying laptops so perhaps a little ancient LMAO).

our campus is rampant with fake cambon totes. i want to gag all day long...

i've used everything from coach totes to burberry totes to a vera bradley messenger (don't laugh). depends on the day and the outfit, lol.

i'm kind of leaning towards the idea that it's not as important as i thought. my books are freaking heavy this semester, so if my burberry makes my shoulder hurt less, great. if a vera does, fine. if it's a freaking jansport, super. i'm so over worrying about what other people on campus think- their fakes are disgusting anyways. so there.

i don't see any difference in taking a high end bag to school or what most students wear - expensive shoes/sneakers. it doesn't matter to me. i didn't realize people actually worried about this kind of stuff.

welll.... IMO you dress for the occasion. So whenever it's unsuitable, it's considered tacky, whether it's overpriced or underpriced, basically, isn't it all about dressing the part? and since it's school, unless you're doing ur honors or phd and fully supporting yourself, won't it be a bit OTT to come in full blown designer garbs? i mean, flip flops aren't appropriate for formal occasions, i dont think OTT designer garbs should be appropriate for school... that's just my 2 cents...

I wear designer things to school, but clothes wise, I dress down (casually with flip flops--no heels or boots).

Dress and wear what you want.

Is college university? Sorry about my ignorance, but here college means 'place you live in in university', so it confuses me. If it's university then I think they can take whatever the hell they want, it's their choice. If you can keep it classy, then go for it.

But if we're talking about high school then I definitely do not think that is right.

As long as you can afford to replace it if it gets damaged by books, etc.
I don't see anything wrong with it.....

Nobody in my school carries designer bags (except one or two) because uniforms + designer bags just don't work. Plus, we have a lot of files and such to carry so it doesn't make sense. For me, I'm pretty content with my good o' union jack messenger!

I don't think anyone said there WAS a difference between the two, but my thread was about designer bags because this is a purse forum.

I don't see the problem. Many high end manufacturers make appropriate bags for school use; messengers, backpack, suitcases and portefolios etc.
