Default Wow...talk about catching someone in a lie!
I went in to have air put in my tire today as it has a slow leak. The guy who did it told me I needed brakes soon. Now this car only has 14,000 miles on it so I know darn well it does not need brakes! You should have seen his face when I told him. Do auto repair places just think we women and easy????

I wouldn't necessarily say he is lying. It depends on how hard you've been braking, what the pad material is comprised of, etc.

I do my own brakes. I measure the rotors and examine the brake pads when I take off the rims from the car, so there is a chance he is telling you the truth.

But I do acknowledge there are mechanics or service technicians that take advantage of naive men and women.

I've had brakes wear down at that mileage or less. I didn't think it could possibly be the recently replaced brakes, so I waited till they were totally gone and my car was making a screeching grinding sound. It might be worth a second opinion.

That screeching sound, are the brake pad wear indicators. They come in contact w/ the rotor when the pad level is too low....producing that sound. The worse case scenario would be if you ignore that sound, eventually it'll cause a deep groove/excessive damage to your brake rotor which means a full replacement. Worse case beyond that, is damage caused to the brake caliper itself, which is even more expensive.

*Some brake pads do not have brake pad wear indicators, so don't assume all brake pads have them.

The rotor! That's what it's called. I wore down into the rotor, and that was the grinding sound. My car was old and clunkety enough that I couldn't hear the indicators. Those suckers were long gone.

Definitely check it out. It can also depend on what the pads are made of. I had to have the brake pads on my Saab changed at something like 5000 miles. They had tried a new material. Mine squealed when I was going at low speeds, not even when I was breaking. As soon as the dealer swapped them out, there was no problem and they lasted something like 20-25k more miles. But that first set...yikes!

Ouch! Once you start hearing a grinding sound you're probably going to have to have the rotors "turned" (where they smooth out the grooves etched into them), and if they're too thin they'll have to replace them completely. Trust me, THAT is expensive LOL
