This is my #1 pet peeve too. I can't stand it when people say nuc-yoo-lar, UGGH!!! I don't know WHY people pronounce it like that.

I also *hate* it when people don't pronounce the "d" or "t" at the end of words. Like when they say "child" without the "d" at the end, or "perfect" without the "t" at the end. My DH does this sometimes and it drives me up the wall! He says it's because he's too "lazy" to say the consonants at the end. lol.

I have heard it in real life, even by PhD scientists (not in that field of study). My DH laughs because when I hear it on tv I cannot help but make gakking noises, LOL. It's an involuntary response!
LOL, that is who i always think of too when i think of "nuc-yoo-lar"! Hopefully the next one can pronounce it correctly!!

When Homer Simpson says nuculer it's funny.
(Especially because he's correcting someone who's saying it correctly.)

When the 'leader' of a certain country says it, it's really worrying.

Loving this thread!
I'm agreeing with almost everything here. Personally I hate the word "tits" although I'm fine with "boobies."

My husband says "baggages" and "luggages." Are these even real words??

It's not that I can't stand it, but "idear" rather than "idea" annoys me a little. I know some people (like my dearest daddy) were raised saying that and it's hard for them to change the way they say it.

I've noticed that a local Boston accent adds the extra "r" sound at the end of words ending in "a" - so perhaps it is also local to a UK accent (Ilovemybug and chag - are you both in the UK??)

To me (not from Boston or from the UK), the difference I hear is:

(1) Idea: eye-DEE-uh
(2) Idear: eye-DEE-ur

I can't stand it when people say "I could care less" meaning you actually care and that if you wanted to you could "care less"...
The saying is "I couldn't care less"... meaning that you DO NOT care at all and it is not possible to CARE ANY LESS then you already do!!

"prostrate" instead of prostate

When people call the game "Trivial Pursuits" (my Aunty does this. Nails on a board every time).

"Pacifically" instead of specifically

Once I heard a woman say (and I couldn't believe it): "archeries", when she was referring to her arteries
