Default Why would a website exaggerate their guests viewing numbers?
I'm sorry if this is in the wrong area, my apologies if you need to move.

I recently joined a MB to answer another members question. It's a pretty small board. But I looked at the bottom of the page, where people viewing is listed.
There are 65 members online and 12,096 guests ???

I'm calling BS, but why? Who do they think they are fooling? Why would a website owner fake counts?

Just curious, thanks for reading.

One guess would be to (a) attract others to view/join and (b) attract advertisers.

To lie.

Example-
I have 10K signed business contracts under my belt.

A competitor recently changed her "2K contracts signed" website to state signed to 25K contracts signed.

Say WHAT!?!

I happen to know the liar's Bff. Liar is a receptionist full time and an X on weekends and evenings. I have been full time since a zillion years ago.

Lately, I've been busy (working, moving into a new house, opening a secondary FUN business, painting art, being happy, having a life, etc).

When I come up for air, I will report this biz lying a@@ to our state's licensing agency.

Moral of the story -
Use a visitor counter on your websuite AND
LIE
and I will sue your butt + haunt you 4ever!

If you do not offend me, another tPF member will consult me and take over the torture of you.

Just like the evil guy in the adorable movie "Dave" with Sig Weaver and Kevin Kline when evil guy was shouting at Dave on TV -

"DIE pond scum!!!!!"

Thank you Ellie Mae, that was the only think I could think of. The site is so small threads are unanswered for days to weeks. I guess if your going to lie, the bigger the better.

ProfNot many hugs to you. I would rather have my butt kicked than move. Such a big job. I was your post about being used for your knowledge. Please remember when dealing with commission employees....

I know your talent and knowledge will put you ahead.

Yup.

But that only works until someone requests an audit ...

I first read this as "an adult," not an audit . Oops, sorry everyone.

Third party companies do audits of websites' numbers when requested, usually by advertisers, to verify traffic/registered members/etc.

It's the same concept of auditing when a TV commercial is run (to prove to the advertiser that it did in fact air). Almost like a written confirmation.

It's not something you can just request, though.

I thought maybe something o do with advertisements. The more people viewing their site the more they vcan charge to advertise on it.
