It's funny you should mention this. My mother has always scoffed at people whose homes do not have curtained windows. To her, it seems tasteless.

LOL! Wow...as soon as I moved into my townhouse I immediately took down the gawd-awful late 1970s drapes (gross mustard yellow color) and replaced them with custom wood blinds that are kind of plantation style, on all the windows that face the main road. I don't like overly-fussy window treatments so these are just perfect for me.
I don't have anything on the spare bedroom window, as it faces the back and right now is just a junk/storage room. When I eventually get it made into a guest room (LOL) it definitely will have blinds of some sort! I can't imagine not having something on windows for privacy. I like to walk around in my undies too! |

My curatains are never down. They are always to the side, so sunlight can come in, and I just forget to take them down. I hope no one is watching me sleep..

I never bothered putting any up because I knew I would move out when my lease ended.
Window treatments are pretty expensive, and as a renter, I certainly don't want to pay for it! I've seen my neighbors peeking into my house before though. |

I'm in NI and I'm a bit confused by this question (and some of the replies!) We have curtains in our living room and for our front door (as we have glass side panels) which are closed every night and are opened every morning. Our living room faces fields and hedges though so it's not as if we're ever overlooked. Our bedrooms have fabric Roman blinds - I would have curtains but the windows are so close to the side walls it just wouldn't work. And we have roller blinds in the kitchen/dining room.
I do know what it's like to live in a built-up area where you are overlooked though - where I lived it seemed that net curtains were the answer in most homes, which I truely loathed, but they did serve a function and reluctantly had them myself. I am truely shocked to think that some people might actually feel that they have to close their curtains/blinds in daylight hours due to privacy reasons. Maybe I've misinterpreted some of the situations mentioned here though... ? I just think it's soo wrong to almost be like a prisoner in your own home - I mean I just love seeing the outside world from my home, and I really couldn't bear it not having natural light flooding into my house during the day. I'm guess I'm very lucky though not being overlooked. But lace/net curtains although cheesy do allow natural daylight in without being too obtrusive.Anyway, I don't see curtains out of favour where I am, and even if they were I'd still be using them, at night only that is!

And it was good that we did it - the apartment next door to us used to sit with their blinds up and sometimes their front door open (if the weather was nice) and they got their back door kicked in and their big TV stolen. I think it was somewhat different in that particular apartment complex because the units and their doors/windows faced directly into the parking lot and the complex had no gate/security, but I can totally understand why people do it. I'm just glad I don't have to anymore. |

We moved into our current home and there was not one curtain, drape, blind or anything on any of the windows. I thought it was strange. At night I really like to have the blinds or drapes closed.

Dust.
I don't like the look and feel of curtains. I find them obtrusive, suffocating, and just plain ugly. I prefer blinds. |

We live way out in the middle of nowhere, but we still have curtains. They are not the stodgy-feeling, tapestry curtains of the past, but nice, light colored, lined drapes that open fully for daytime. We have blinds in the kitchen and bathroom and Roman shades in the bedrooms. Regardless of what one uses, I could not live in a home with no window coverings; it would feel like living in a fishbowl.

Thankfully, almost everywhere I've live I've had curtains of some sort, even when they weren't necessarily needed.
At my parents house they have blinds or curtains in every room, as we live right next to the main highway there and anyone driving by could just look in (their house is an A-frame with very large windows). Personally I like having nice, thick, curtains so that when I'm sleeping the sun doesn't come in first thing and wake me up

We live on top of a hill and someone would need binoculars to see in our windows. We do have shades, but rarely have them pulled at night because of this. It used to sometimes scare me when I would walk by a window and see my reflection, lol! I am used to it now and never think about it. (there are probably pictures of me in my ratty old house garb on the internet somewhere...)

I think it's odd not to have curtains in your house too. Im paranoid about always making sure our blinds/curtains are shut as soon as it gets dark outside. You never know what weirdos or peeping toms are lurking around outside!

LOL! I thought you meant because everyone seems to use blinds or shutters these days. I actually just got back from the home improvement store. Bought curtain rods. Sheesh, between the rods and the panels i bought, it's expensive! Oh well, only gotta do it once and it's gonna look so purty when they're up.
As far as having the window coverings open at night for anyone to see in... As soon as it starts getting dark I make my rounds to close everything up. To have them open is just not safe in my opinion. 1) Everyone can see what you have and 2) Making a firm suggestion to all the single ladies living alone, please close your binds at night.
