Just wanted to find out how many people were interested whether or not their items are imported? At tonight's family dinner, I mentioned that Michelle Obama has all her clothes made here in the U.S. by U.S. designers. Everyone in my family was impressed. I was just wondering if anyone cared about the outsourcing enough to pay a few extra dollars to buy things that were made in the United States?

I just want to add... I am not a manufacturer. Was just interested in knowing. I personally would like to see garments made here in our country again.

I would love for everything to be made in the North America so they can be exempt from Customs upon entry into Canada.

I did a quick check in Macy's a few weeks ago, and I was hard pressed to find any clothing made in the USA. Most of it was made in China, Vietnam and South Korea. Even higher end stores like Neiman Marcus have the same type of stock ... although they had more items made in Italy, with a higher price tag. |

I buy things because I like it, not because of where it is made. I'm not going to buy a car because its American even though I hate it, so I'm not exactly going to do the same with handbags.

Anyone interested in buying all AMerican-made should try it; it isn't as easy as a person might think. Like pp have mentioned, many stores don't even carry US brands, and sometimes when you do find them the prices are so much higher as to make them unfeasible for many buyers. For example, when I was buying toys for my children last holiday season, I wanted to buy a marble run. I went to a store where I knew they carried US-made things (as well as imported items). The US made toy was FIVE TIMES the price of the imported set. I probably would even have been willing to pay double the price of the imported item for US made, but I just couldn't stomach the enormous difference in cost for sets that were almost identical.
These price differences may not apply to designer items, though, as all designer prices are inflated. Overall, I make an effort to buy things as locally as I can, but that isn't always possible for a number of different reasons (items are unavailable that were made here; the price difference makes it cost-prohibitive; the quality of the items is significantly different, etc.). |

The only clothing that I have knowingly bought that was made in the USA is from American Apparel. The quality was terrible, but hopefully that doesn't set the standard for other clothing made in the US.

I would. Problem is, where I live I could hardly find any clothing that are made here in the US. Instead I see a lot made in China, Vietnam and Europe. It has gotten harder and harder to support my local businesses due to availability (or lack thereof).

I'm not a clothing manufacturer, but am in the manufacturing industry. I would want clothes that are of high quality, well-made, beautifully designed, comfortable, made of sustainable materials regardless of where it's made. I am willing to pay a little more when the clothes meet these criteria. I think the same could be said for things other than clothes, too. Where it's made is not really something I look to first.

yes! I would. support local businesses
american made doesnt always mean low quality. but like others said its hard to find clothes made in USA. Juicy Couture use to be made in USA but I know they were manufactured in China...no matter what the tag says. lol |

I think the sad truth is hardly anything is made in this country anymore. I guess I was asking because I wanted to see how many people cared. I, for one, care a lot. Just as I patronize other countries, I would have loved to see a unified spirit going on in ours to bring back manufacturing and add more jobs and pride!

There are a lot of small West Coast brands that are entirely US-made. I don't think many of the bigger ones are. Also, something that is tagged "Made in the USA" does not have to be entirely made here. There are some criteria related to percentage or stages of production.
