How using sentence like "if you never actuallly worked in a medical office, I suppose in a la-la land this is an outrageous treatment" is objective or constructive? Isnt this outríght offensive " Lastly, receptionists aren't exactly paid to kiss your worries away or be a personal therapist. If someone's trying to INSTIGATE A FIGHT with me, because they don't have an ounce of rational thinking or common sense, that's their problem." ? No surprise OP was trying to defend herself. I would, too. |

Ummm, wait a second. It's a HIPPA violation for her to give them over the phone but she can leave this info on an answering machine, which anyone in that house could randomly listen to? Can someone help me understand this as I don't work in the medical field at all. OP, glad you got your info. Sorry it's was such a headache in the meantime. |

Another doctor that just has to chime in here.
The receptionist probably called with the results because the doctor gave her permission to do so. In our office (and I do pap smears so this applies) the staff will send me the result (we have electronic health records) and I will send them back a message interpreting the result. THEN the receptionist can call the patient with the result. The receptionist cannot give a result without the doctor interpreting it. Even if it just says "normal," they cannot give a result without a doctor giving the okay. That's just how it works. And I am going to agree with cherubashka (I think I slaughtered her screen name) that sometimes people may not realize how busy a medical office is. Our phones never stop ringing and we have four or five (depending on the day) people answering them. And this may make me seem like a bad doctor, but people call with stupid sh$t sometimes, like "I've had a sore throat for a day." Really? Seriously? But it was out of line for the receptionist to snap at you. I have to fight the urge to say "Seriously?" constantly throughout the course of a day. But I put on my smiling face and push that feeling back when I go into the exam room. I have never snapped at a patient, despite the litany of "you just want my copay" that I hear all the time, among other insults. /off soapbox P.S. I hope your results were okay.

I realize how busy medical offices are. Don't we all? I can't get in to see the doctor for a month or more sometimes. I mean really... and so. I was a receptionist at a mortgage office years ago with 100 lines to manage, yeah it was stressful, but I never intentionally hung up on anyone and never told anyone who was disconnected and called back, "this is ridiculous" and hang up again. I wouldn't expect to get test results from a receptionist, but I would expect to be told I could call back and when in a courteous and professional manner... no matter what service industry, but particularly medical.
There are plenty of people in this economy who would love that receptionist position. The management should be made aware of things like this. It's the only way they'll know. However I do think in many cases it's a management issue, starts from the top down. I know there is a defensiveness from some working in the medical community. I understand it. You are over worked, under paid and many times under appreciated. I feel like the reality of that stress can and does spill over to the patients. Could be what happened here. People get burnt out and it can affect the job they do and how well they do it. I understand it, but it's still not right. In my experience whenever a doctor appointment is needed it's usually a nerve racking sometimes scary thing, so I look to the medical staff for not only their expertise, but their support, guidance and sometimes compassion. When I as a patient receive none of that, it makes for a pretty uncomfortable experience. |
