I'm doing a project for school. And i was wondering if you can call a food addict (meaning, love buying food on the shelves of supermarket, not even thinking if you would eat it or need it) a shopaholic? Or does shopaholic just specifically for shopping clothes/shoes/etc?

Hmmm.. that's interesting.
I love to shop, cook and try new things, so the whole experience is very enjoyable but I'm not a shopoholic. I've known people who buy every new thing out there, so they'll just buy buy buy and they would always show off whenever we went to visit them. They obviously didn't need all that food but it's just like they had to have it, whatever was on the commercials or new in stores, that sort of thing. On the worst extreme of the spectrum others I've known to buy food for no reason are hoarders (some have specific areas of interest and food is a common one. If you've ever seen the A&E series about it you'll know what I mean) Anyway, they buy buy buy and don't need or even use it. Kind of like the mentality of stocking up for a war, but never quite getting around to using it so you can easily find things 20 years or older in their houses, frozen meats..etc. Some will keep yogurt for 6 months thinking it's still "ok" and hesitate to throw it out when others point it out. Not sure if that's what you were looking for but it's what came to mind :) |

A shopoholic is a compulsive shopper, so if a person is a compulsive grocery buyer, then I guess that makes them a shopaholic. I always thought a food addict was a compulsive eater. I sometimes think I suffer from that, as I love food and eat and eat and eat.
Good luck with your school project. |

I always thought a food addict is pretty much the same thing as someone having an eating disorder. (?) I think of a shopaholic as someone that can't control their shopping habits, mostly on material items.

To me a food addict is someone that overeats or eats for emotional comfort. If someone just buys food without needing it or even liking it I would say they are a shopaholic. We knew a guy that would buy stuff out of catalogs and never even open the boxes. It was the thrill of the buy that gave him the high.

I would think someone that purchases things they do not need be it food, clothes etc. is a compulsive shopper. Compulsive meaning they are not giving it any thought, it's a habit type thing?

Is the person addicted to the buying or to the food? If it's the food, it's compulsive overeating or hoarding. If it's the buying, it's a shopaholic.

A person who's addicted to food, which is not the same as being addicted to shopping. For your project, I would google "food addiction" and "addiction" in general. There's tons of info out there. Good luck!
