oh, now I'm just remembering everything! Once we had a customer order liver and onions. He ate his meal, but he said the last bite was spoiled. He spit it out on a napkin and started screaming at our manager to "smell it!!!"
On another occasion I had to ask a customer for his id and he showed me his drivers license and told me.. "You see this?? This is used ONLY for underwater emergencies!" He was so high on whatever he took, he collapsed right in front of my eyes! Called an ambulance but he refused help and ended up driving away! There are so many stories to tell in 10 years of working in restaurants! |

^^^Omg, that reminds me of so much.
I have had a guy have a grand mal seizure at my table before. And another woman who had an severe allergic reaction at a table. The only two times that I've ever actually had to call an ambulance. |

I worked at a 5 star French restaurant a long time ago. The owner was wicked cheap, he always said "you've got to puuuush it out!" like we were all giving birth!
![]() We had these pretty crystal servers for the cream for coffee. We had to dump the leftover cream, after it was served and cleared from the table, into a silver bucket - so he could reuse it the next day for his alfredo sauce. It sat out all night in the hot kitchen. |

The one really good thing about my restaurant is that at the end of the night EVERYTHING gets tossed out. The only things we keep are the bases for our sauces and our soups. And then everything is all made up again each morning, so at least everything is fresh. |

i just remembered a story.
a pregnant lady who came in with her husband (who i originally thought was her gay best friend). she wanted a plate of food but didn't want it "black and burned". the chicken, btw, was pre-coated in a sugary glaze, when cooked, would blacken but was NOT burned. she wanted the plate not "black and burned" and i explained to her that all the chicken for this dish was soaked in the sugary glazee and that it turned "black" cause of the sugars reaction to heat and being cooked. so she said that she was able to order it "last time" without it being black and undercooked. so i explained to her the only way for me to serve it to her "not black" was if it was undercooked. she repeated, that she was pregnant and didn't want undercooked poultry and wanted it the way she had it "last time" which, i already explained to her, was undercooked. who i thought was her gay best friend insisted i serve it to her the way she wanted it (undercooked). so i went ahead and served it to her undercooked. what really bugged me is that it is as if she couldn't process in her brain that she had eaten and was going to eat undercooked chicken! it didn't taste "burned" but just like sweet chicken! at the end of the meal, i asked if they wanted separate bills and they both looked at me strangely and said, "no". so i gave them the bill. they must've complained to the manager cause she came over and lectured me to not ask opposite sex tables if they wanted separate bills, only to ask same sex tables if they wanted separate bills. (ignorant much?) btw, the wife looked like a jessica alba twin. the husband was a exact twin of emmett from "queer as folk" (aka actor peter paige). http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0656739/ |

My dad owns a restaurant & he has a ton of crazy stories.
The most recent one I can recall is this moron who hailed from California. He was a tourist (in Hawaii, FYI) & let me establish that Hawaii is NOT California. This tidbit is very important to remember. He decided to order an extra bowl of rice, but freaked out when he learned it was $1.50. My dad calmly informed him that he saw the menu before he ordered, so he didn't get what the big deal was. The guy proceeded to lecture my dad on how a bowl of rice from where he was was only $1, blah, blah, blah. He says his local Costco sold a bag of rice for only $15, blah, blah, blah. Seriously?? You expect to come to a tourist destination and one of most expensive cities in the U.S., PLUS you clearly had the chance to read the menu before you ordered, yet you still pull an act like this? My dad called him out though & told him he was being nonsensical for even trying to compare prices. There was also one guy who asked for raw meat. My dad wouldn't serve him. As for my own story... My friends & I decided to hold a birthday dinner at Croma, which was a sort of a nice restaurant. You'd think that a fancy restaurant on Newbury St. in Boston (located in one of the more wealthier areas) would at least be decent. The waiter first informed us they were out of several ingredients (on a Friday night, really?). They then undercooked several orders of steaks we had & when my friends asked for it to be brought back, they pretty much burnt the steaks instead. When we were finished, a friend wanted to order dessert, but the waiter pretty much told her that we had to leave because another group was coming in. The restaurant was closed a few months later. |

This thread (and the retail one) kills me!
OK, I've probably posted about working in an ice cream store in high school (not a restaurant per se but it's food, LOL). We were one of 3 stores owned by a married couple and the wife was an absolute tyrant. She would belittle us in front of customers and come booming into the store like a hurricane, bellowing "....I want you people [us employees] to know you are DOING THIS WRONG!!" In her thick accent and all. I will go to my grave remembering her voice. She drove this really fancy Mercedes and the license plate was her first name. I remember one day she pulled up and left her headlights on all afternoon. We all noticed, but nobody told her. |

I've never worked in the food industry, but I do have stories!
Not too long ago, my professor told me one. There was this restaurant that she enjoyed going to from time to time. One day she got there, though, and it was mysteriously shut down. Naturally, she was a bit bummed and wondered what had happened. The next day, an article in the paper caught her eye -- and it was about the restaurant. Up here where I go to school, there are quite a bit of deer. One night, on the road by the restaurant, a deer was killed. The carcass stayed there in the road throughout most of the night. Turns out, the owners of this particular restaurant wanted to make use of the deer and many people in the vicinity reported seeing them going into the road and trying to drag the rotting carcass inside of the restaurant to use for the next day's special! :-O Needless to say, they were shut down! And my professor stopped being bummed about it, haha. My DBF used to work at Subway as a side job while he studied for LSATs. Every night he'd come home and he'd tell me all the wild stories from work that day. Once, I went up to visit him and I was able to stay in the store with him and watch him work a shift from open to close. Boy was I disgusted! DBF was the only one who actually did his job. Everyone else in the store was so lax and simply did not care. I was in the back room where the sink and dishes are along with DBF's coworker (while DBF worked at the front of the store). All of a sudden, a bunch of dishes and food containers fell onto the floor and into a pool of muck, grime, water, and a little bleach (the owner of the store is too cheap to fix the leaking pipes and sink, so that's what results). The girl picked up the food containers and put them back in the box! She didn't even wash them off! I was like, "Are you crazy?!?!? You can't put food back into those filthy containers and then serve them to customers!" And I washed them off MYSELF! The girl rolled her eyes and just went and began playing on her cell phone. I told DBF what happened and he shook his head but wasn't surprised. I then helped him prep for the next shift. I can't tell you how much rotting food was there and it was pretty surprising to me since Subway is supposed to be so "fresh." DBF says they were mandated to put the fresh food on the bottom of the container and the rotting food up top so that it'd sell first. He also warned me not to drink from the soda machine. I asked why and he showed me. There was a big drain/filtering pipe connected to the soda machine and it was completely BLACK with dirt. DBF said when he first started working there, he'd drink water on his break but then he'd notice dirt particles floating around in his cup. :-O He says he doesn't eat or drink out of the store anymore. The owner of the store is REALLY LAX. I've met him and all he cares about is making a quick buck. He's really cheap too, so at night, he turns off the fridge to save on energy even though that allows the food to rot! :-O It's ridiculous! And I'm so surprised the health inspector hasn't shut him down yet! He also alters the ingredients in some of the items. Like, it costs more to buy regular mayo and light mayo so instead, he just puts the regular mayo in the light mayo jar and pretends it's light mayo. These are just some of the horrors... DBF has stories for DAYS about what went on in that store! Furthermore, DBF also told me how hard it was to work because often times, other workers or even the OWNER would have sex on the food preparation table while he was slicing meats or trying to cut tomatoes. DBF said he did the best he could to keep the area clean and separate, but after awhile, he just got fed up being the only one who cared and had to walk away. Yikes! |

^Ew. Makes you wonder what's really going on when you are only a customer!
I've never worked in the food industry, too scared to never go out to eat again lol, but I've had some bad experiences as a customer. For some reason, no matter how long it is between visits, or locations UNO's SUCKS. When the location next to my house opened up the waiters were rude, they'd give us the wrong meals completely (like they'd give me steak with shrimp and I hate seafood, when I'd ordered steak tips), or they'd give my vegetarian father items with meat on them when he asked for the meat to be removed, like potato skins with bacon, they'd give them to us with bacon. That last and final time I went to UNO's was w/ my boyfriend probably close to 2 years ago. We asked to be seated outside since the weather was unseasonably warm and because we're loud we decided to sit furthers from the door, and only one other couple sat next to us. So, the entire outside patio was filled with other couples, it's not like we were just being difficult from sitting so far away from the door, but the waitress completely ignored us! She took over 10 mins to take our drink orders, finally gave them to us and took forever to then take our food orders, never refilled our drinks, when the food came, never gave us silverware, it was crazy. But the whole time she was SO attentive to the other couples! Enough was finally enough and we asked her to call her manager over who at least apologized to us and her service picked up a little bit after that. Ugh, just so frustrating! It still makes me mad that she ignored us for no real reason, considering we weren't even that loud that night! And by loud I say I'm a loud talker, I've never been a quiet talker and we both laugh a lot! Another time I remember being in middle school and my family and I went out to TGI Fridays. I asked for my burger to have nothing but cheese on it and when I got it, it had everything, lettuce, tomato, pickels, etc. I hated all that stuff so when I told her I didn't want it, she reached over and removed it with her hands!!! At the time I didn't get the big deal so as soon as she took it all away, I chomped down on it before my shocked parents could ask for it to be taken back completely and re-cooked, b/c lets face it, who knows where her hands had been and the last time she had washed them! Now that I think about it, I'm mortified at how gross she was and I was for eating it!P.S. for the poster who had a bad experience at Bennigans, that sucks because it used to be one of my favorite restaurants and my Bennigans was great! It's where my boyfriend first asked me out also, I really wish they hadn't closed down! :( |

I was in Athens, greece eating at an outside resturaunt for dinner and a few tables over we saw a huuuuge roachish looking bug fall down from a tree onto a guys shoulder and then run up his neck and down the back of his shirt! He had to get up and walk down the street to take his shirt off. He actually stayed very calm. However for the rest of our meal we were paranoid and itchy.
