Dear tourists of New York City,

In some ways, I appreciate your presence in my hometown. After all, your spending increases the revenue in the city, which, theortically speaking, should lower my taxes. However, a gentle note with some guidance, from someone who lives and works in the city...

(1) Do not walk as if you are in a mall, six-people abreast. In Manhattan, sidewalks are narrow, and frequently very crowded. People walk quickly (more on this below) in two directions on the same sidewalk. Thus, the only way this traffic flow will work is if you do not insist on walking with everyone in your party in ONE STRAIGHT LINE ACROSS THE SIDEWALK. Folks, Manhattan is not your local mall. Granted, it has shopping, but it is also a place where people live and work, where some have strict deadlines and places to be by specific times. Please, please, please respect this...barring that, don't sigh indigently when a New Yorker plows through your line.
(2) We walk quickly here. In fact, studies have been done indicating that New Yorkers walk significantly faster than the rest of the American population. We have places to be and things to do, and most of the time, foot is the quickiest way to get from point to point. Pick up the pace a bit. We'd appreciate it.
(3) There is NO need to stop and take pictures on the sidewalk in Times Square. Hundreds of thousands of people work in Times Square, and do not feel like being subjected to an endless dodging of photographs when we leave our offices for the day. Yes, we understand that Times Square is pretty to some. BUT, your pictures would capture much more of Times Square if you stopped in the median strip between 43rd-45th street & Broadway/7th Avenue. You wouldn't be blocking traffic, and you'd still get that darned shot you long for.
(4) Never, ever ask a New Yorker where the fake handbags are sold. Or at least, never ever ask THIS New Yorker where fake handbags are sold.
(5) When at places like Starbucks, you will often encounter lines before placing your order. Here is a gentle hint: above the cash register, there's a menu with all the available items for purchase. I'd highly recommend figuring out what you want BEFORE you get to the cash register, instead of holding up the line further as you and your family hem and hew over what coffee to order.
(6) Please inform your ten-year old daughter that the subway pole is not to be swung around on, as if it was a pole in a different location.
(7) It's near impossible to hail a cab between the hours of 4:30 and 5:30. It's a shift change for cab drivers around that time, it's a time when business travelers are leaving the office and heading to Penn or Grand Central, it's dinner time for the pre-theatre crowd...it's hard. Better start walking, or figure out that subway map if you need to get somewhere during that time.

xoxo,
New Yorker

AidaNY,
I think they need to post that letter in NYC hotels. Too funny. I have spent a lot of time in NY and those same things would drive me nuts too. I live in Philly and wish people here would abide by those rules. Even people that live here act like NYC tourists.

Dear annoying co workers- Listen up, and listen carefully. It is not necessary to question my wardrobe choices. How is the person who wears the rinky dinky just rolled out of bed look going to comment on my clothing. If its one thing i know is how to dress, and even on my worst days I still dress better than you. Please don't ask me dumb questions like: why are you dressed up on friday- um, excuse me did you read it in some fashion manual that you can't get dressed on friday? Please don't question my color choices because if its one thing that I know is color. If i wear a black dress, cream sweater guess what- I can wear any color shoes because cream is a neuitral. HOw is the person who only wears 4 colors going to question my color choices? Its annoying, you are annoying leave me the eff alone!!

And to my other co-worker
Oh yeah, and yes, I am single, and yes I love it! You on the other hand wish you were single. Stop cheating on your long term girlfriend. If she were to dump your azz you wouldn't know how to be single

P.S. Are you sure, that you didn't bring the "knats" with you?
Dear "Service with a smile... and knats" waitress

I promise you, this had me laughing till I cried! That so rarely happens just reading something online Thanks for making my day!

Dear Ex-boss,
I bet you think telling your current employee that you wanted to re-hire one of your recently fired employees back just so you could fire her again was smart & funny, but I can tell you, your current employee is just counting the moments until she can tell you to stuff it & leave your sorry company & your nasty attitude behind.
You're a pathetic little worm.

Bite me.

Don't you love the idiots that are commenting on how we dress. Those are the people that show up on "What Not to Wear"

I love this!! When I was a pre-school teacher I use to wear heels to work, and a cream colored coat in the winter on the playground. I use to have this one woman make snotty remarks like "wow, a white coat what are you thinking"....I would say "well, I guess I just like to live life on the edge!!" Hello, thats what washing mach. are for!! I still wear my cute clothes as a nanny....who says that I have to wear sweats just because I work with small children.

Dear students,

I know I shouldn't have an attitude problem, and I will admit that I will work on that when I do my next teaching assignment. However, when you tell me that I can't grade on the straight scale or that I wasn't available because you couldn't attend my discussion/office hours, you don't realize that I don't have that much control over many administrative things. One of the things that bugs me is when you don't bother to e-mail and ask to make an appointment with me, which is what I'm more than happy to do. I am flexible if you are nice!

As far as my grading is concerned, you might be surprised that the lowest grade I gave was a D, which I handed out to about 10 or so people out of 100 students. I gave out many As and Bs; sorry you didn't luck out if you got a C or lower. Don't take it personally; I probably don't know you because no one makes an effort to talk with the TAs. And honestly, the reason why many of you aren't doing well in the course is because you haven't done well in the exams, which constitute a higher percentage of your grade than the stupid essays.

Which brings me to the next letter:

Dear Pollyanna Professor:

I know you want tenure and I know you want to get hired. I know you are a very sweet, kind woman. I respect that. HOWEVER, you have no idea what kind of hell you put me and the other TA through this past semester. Not only do you assign a ridiculous assignment to a bunch of undergraduates who don't understand how to write a research paper, you make US (the TAs) look bad because you significantly changed our grades to some academically weak students who don't deserve a grade change! The only reason why you did it is because I know those students came to your office hours crying their eyes out over failing the midterm (which we don't have any control over!!!) and the paper. Now the students unnecessarily hate the TAs because they think we're hard-ass graders...when in fact, it was a poor assignment to begin with. Several of those prompts had nothing to do with the course at hand and yet you insisted on using it because you had a lot of faith that they would be great. Umm, hello? Not to diss the students, but this is probably their first upper division class...a lot of them don't know how to write a freaking paper! That's why they sucked! And I'm appalled by the fact that you changed some of my C-s and Ds to B-s when my average was already an 80% (which is NOT a normal distribution!)...obviously those students didn't deserve it because they did bad on the midterm AND final!!!

I am just so *beeping* glad that this class is over. You've basically undermined my grading credibility and the other TA's. You're not even doing these other students you "saved" a favor because I know there are several other professors who won't be as kind or forgiving. I wasn't able to reach out to any of the students who had problems with me because they wanted to go to YOU first...they obviously believed that you were the good "mom" who could change their grades and I was the "evil" older sibling. It is pretty evident as to why some of my evaluations were terrible (although I have a lot of good ones thanks to the students who've had me before or actually communicated with me). You are not helping students learn if you change their grades; you need to teach them responsibility and encourage them to learn from their mistakes! But whatever, it was YOUR class, not mine.

Regards,

Your (tired) grad student.
Oh Bernz....I feel your pain! I once had a professor pass two students who submitted identical papers! I was ready to turn them in for cheating, and gave them "F" grades on their mid-terms, and she changed them to "C" grades, and gave them a "warning".

I promise, once your in the role of professor, you'll use these past experiences to create meaningful assignments, memorable lectures, and you'll be a GREAT professor! The crying, inattentive, unresponsible, under-prepared students....sadly, those will still haunt you! Hang in there!
