Default My 32 year old friend thinks "Guess" is designer
Should I say anything?

She just recently got a better job and I asked her what she's been buying for herself and she said blah blah and one designer shirt from Guess. My friend has never really made that much money before and now she does "ok" (better than before) but at 32 shouldn't you know better than to think Guess is high end? That's a brand mainly for teenagers.

I probably shouldn't say anything because my friend will most likely say "I think it s weird when people are SO into brand names that they know the names of each and every single one" etc. My friend never had a lot of money and also never had an interest in high-end fashion, designers whatsoever, but STILL, shouldn't she know at better than to think Guess is high-end or "designer"? To her, that's expensive. I think she said "oh and I got one expensive shirt from Guess"... I don't remember the EXACT wording, if she said Guess was "expensive" or "designer" but I'm pretty sure she used one of those words and possibly even both.

I have always known my friend wore cheap clothes, Forever21 etc... but still... the fact that she even called Guess "designer" makes me feel aghast.

Let it go. To some people, Guess is designer. It doesn't matter what your friend wears or what brands she likes, and it's not your place to criticize her fashion sense.

It's all relative. Guess may be expensive to her. I know at one point in my life it was to me... I saved for about 6 months to buy my first pair of Guess jeans.

Why does it matter what she thinks? Sorry if that sounds harsh, but seriously, in the grand scheme of life, who cares?

I would definitely let it go. As Roo said, it's all relative.

I thought Guess was considered a designer brand, even if it's not high end. Im not sure why it even matters anyway. She sounds proud of her designer shirt. Why burst her bubble by insinuating it's something less, when it has no effect on your life? I wouldn't say anything even if it was a route 66 shirt.

Unless she asked your opinion on whether Guess is high end or not, I don't think you should say anything. As long as she likes what she's wearing, carries herself well and looks presentable in public, I don't see why it should matter at all.

ITA. More importantly, it doesn't matter whatsoever who YOU think is high end or designer, either, to her or anyone else. To "educate" her on what you consider designer is completely pointless and if I may say arrogant on your part. Some people consider Marc Jacobs designer, for others that would be laughable and they think only YSL etc. is high end.
I don't understand what you would achieve from talking to her about this, otehr than make yourself feel better or more knowledgeable, and making her feel bad.

Yea, you guys are right. I'm not going to say anything. I even posted in my original post that I wasn't going to say anything. I just felt a strong "itch" to correct her and tell her that it wasn't designer/expensive.

This is true and you are right. Perhaps I am arrogant (I try not to be, in general) but I did feel like "educating" her a bit even though, yes, I do realize it's pointless. And I didn't say anything and I am not planning on saying anything.

It's just that my friend is old (32)... It's just weird to me that someone so old considers Guess a brand name. Maybe at 21 I could understand... but she's one year older than me. I just still think it's weird to have no knowledge whatsoever about fashion. I am being thrifty with my money these days as well and I'm not buying expensive handbags either, but at least I know what Chanel is. I am not saying that the knowledge makes me any better of a person. I just find it strange that she has no knowledge of it at all.

Is Guess not a brand name? Is it also not a designer name? Something does not have to be high-end to be designer.

And you consider your friend "old" at the age of 32? Sounds a bit arrogant to me.

Depending on her income and/or desire to dress in a certain way Guess items may be expensive to her. Personally I always thought they were very overpriceds for the quality, so are expensive for what you get. But then I feel the same way about D&G...

Maybe, but she may have other interests that you know nothing about, like literature, art, golfing or cars. Who knows, but how would you feel if she told yoou that your taste is cheap or not designer enough, or play down the price of something you just bought and thought was expensive?
Also, I don't think 32 is old. Some people don't get into fashion until they are 50, others never. Maybe she has lots of other stuff to do or on her mind

Last time I checked, Guess was "designed" by Georges Marciano, who is a designer. So, for all intents and purposes, Guess is a designer label. It might not be high end, in the sense of Prada or D & G, but it's a designer label. To add, it's not THAT cheap either. Women's shirts are over 100 bucks in there.

i agree. Guess is designer. whether or not YOU think so doesn't really matter. it's fashionable to her, and she treated herself to it, so why not compliment her and leave it at that. you ARE a friend, right?
