Everyone has a different take on what they consider low, mid, and high-end. There are no right answers on what is considered "designer" because it's all so subjective. I'm just curious as to why you care so much about this that you actually feel "aghast?" It makes you come off as haughty and condescending.

Guess to some people is "high end' but then again Prada shoes are made in Vietnam and that is supposed to be luxury, at the end of the day I would congratulate my friend on her new job and the fact that she is spending more time and money in her appearance and make her feel good. Over time perhaps she will ask you for advice only then is it appropriate to tell her the brands that you like but never by criticizing her taste or where she spends her money.

I wouldn't mention it at all, I think all it would do is embarass her and well I don't see a reason for that. If she wanted to be educated she would possibly ask you or go do it herself. I wasn't there so I can only assume but maybe she was proud of her new purchase and just wanted to tell her friend, does the fact that she considers Guess designer that big of a deal?

Did you post this because you thought people would jump on board with you while they projectile vomited at the thought of clothing that can be bought in most malls and therefore are not "exclusive"? Because you're in the wrong subforum for that.

I'm sure somewhere on this forum you will find people willing to burn your friend at the stake for having been poor most of her life and not being as worldly and fashionable and sophisticated as you, OP. But this is not the place.

Gosh it's all relative, eh? Taste, designer clothing, age...in the end there are far worse things to feel aghast about.

If I were you I would worry more over your definition of friendship than her definition of designer.

I have no problems with this and of course I respect your opinion; I think, though, that it might have to do more with personal style rather than age appropriateness.

IMO Guess is a designer brand, albeit obviously with a much lower price point than many other premier brands. If your friend likes Guess and enjoys buying their products, there's no reason to be aghast... You should be happy for her. She sounds like a very frugal person and I admire that. Also keep in mind that cost is always relative to disposable income. As you mentioned, she never had a lot of money so I can understand why she would consider Guess a luxury and an expensive designer label.

good advice.

Im really confused by this thread. I thought any article of clothing with a brand name tag attached is designer? Like Old Navy, Guess, Valentino??

Even if she does at some point ask for your opinion, there is no reason to share it with her. If she is buying unflattering clothes AND she isn't happy with her look, then you can make some suggestions or take her shopping to help her out. I can't really think of any other situation where your input would be constructive.

I am just astonished that at 36 I am still alive and able to read this thread. If 32 is "so old" 36 is ANCIENT!!!
