I think, if you chose to "educate" her, you might come across as a spoilt little princess who had no manners.

And you wouldn't want anyone to think that of you, would you?

Why would you even want to bother? The notion that you would even consider "saying something" seems completely ignorant.

Did your friend ask for your thoughts? I think it would be rude to say something to her especially since you know it's a matter of her finally being able to afford something nice... Why would you even feel the need to say something? I think it would hurt her feelings. Guess may not be "high end" but it is considered designer. I wear BEBE its not "high end" but its designer, I have pairs of jeans from them that cost $200 sweat suits that cost $200... Personally I hate when people feel the need to "say something". I HAD one friend that was always jealous of me, every time I got a new LV she would say "oh its only $1000.00" or "it's only $600" and she yet all she carried was polo and one beat up coach... There's so many things that actually matter in life, I say get over it!!!

Cosign to what Charles said.

Guess is, technically, designer. It may not be high end, but its 'higher end' than, say, American Eagle.

Heck 5yrs ago I referred to Abercrombies as designer denim LOL

I wouldn't say anything. Maybe people laugh at me because I think BCBG is designer...

And OP, 32 isn't old... hell 52 isn't old. You must be a child... you're surely acting like one.

LOL, OP... If you think your friend has bad taste, you could always bring her to the stores you think she should shop at; or even better, get her a "designer" present appropriate for her age, since you implied that Guess is neither. I have no problems with this and of course I respect your opinion; I think, though, that it might have to do more with personal style rather than age appropriateness.

IMO Guess is a designer brand, albeit obviously with a much lower price point than many other premier brands. If your friend likes Guess and enjoys buying their products, there's no reason to be aghast... You should be happy for her. She sounds like a very frugal person and I admire that. Also keep in mind that cost is always relative to disposable income. As you mentioned, she never had a lot of money so I can understand why she would consider Guess a luxury and an expensive designer label.

To her, that's expensive. I think she said "oh and I got one expensive shirt from Guess"... I don't remember the EXACT wording, if she said Guess was "expensive" or "designer" but I'm pretty sure she used one of those words and possibly even both.

I have always known my friend wore cheap clothes, Forever21 etc... but still... the fact that she even called Guess "designer" makes me feel aghast.
OP, I think this is more so your problem than hers. Guess is a designer brand although many would agree that Guess is not a high-end designer. Guess is considered expensive depending on your socioeconomic background -- it is all relative. Like the way people do not appreciate feedback/comments about their $1,000+ handbag (i.e. "OMG, you spent that much money on a handbag?), people will probably not appreciate feedback/comments about your opinion on brands YOU consider to be designer. It goes both ways.

Personally, I still shop the clearance racks at Macy's for Guess merchandise, and I do not see anything wrong with it. Also, Forever21 clothes are cheaper than clothes hanging on the racks in Macy's, Nordstroms, Neiman Marcus, etc., but it still fulfills the purpose of covering me up and some of the styles are pretty cute. I am in my mid-20s, and if the Forever21 clothes will fit me into my 30s, I am all for it.

Good luck!

I'm sorry to say this... but you sound like a horrible person to hang out with, judging by your post. How on earth could this be so important for you to start a thread about it and bringing your ''old'' friend down? She's not even old... you're just way too immature.

I couldn't care less what my 33 year old friends wear whether it's Gucci, Guess or Gap.

At every income level the consumer percieves some goods a normal good and will purchase more at a rise of income, and other goods an inferior good and will substitute money away from that good and unto other goods at the rise of income. one man's inferior good is another man's normal good. A person who purchases Hermes on the regular might find the thought that lv is a luxury good ridiculous. To be honest you sound like one of those "friends" who....i'll just leave it there. Let your girl enjoy her guess shirt, afterall who knows tomorrow she might die of old age...
