Unfortunately, there isn't much of a way out of it now. Had you admitted the mistake at the beginning and honestly said that you must have been in a rush and left off the "s" they probably would have excused the error. But after passionately defending what you knew was an error, the parents likely won't be as understanding.

I would admit that I made a mistake and move on. You just misspelled a word; as long as the child you are tutoring understands that it should be spelled "hobbies," I really do not see the big deal. I would imagine it being a lot worse if you tried to cover up a silly mistake with even sillier lies.

Good luck!

I'm sure you've had to apologize for mistakes in the past..... it's never easy, but it's the right thing to do. Just go in with your tail between your legs and admit you got the word confused with another. I think it will end up being fine..... good luck!

I would just correct the card and then let it go. If he asks, then admit that you made a mistake.

I think we have all done something that makes us want to crawl under a rock an die of embarrassment. Apologize and try to forget about.

You made a mistake. I'm sure a "well-educated family" knows they happen sometimes having gone through school and all. Next time just own up to a mistake, but try to prevent them by double-checking your handwriting, because we've gotten so used to spellcheck finishing our words for us that mistakes like this happen without being noticed way to often.

You could always spin some outlandish story like it's a common spelling in outback Australia, where you lived when you were a child, and it became the norm for you...and you have a weird habit of still adding the letter "U" in a lot of words like colour and favour. Or you could say it was an honest mistake, that you meant to write the plural, and didn't even realise it until it was too late. On the upside, at least the father is checking and helping with his son's work.
It's actually the "color" spelling that is the backwoods way "Colour" is the proper British way.

LOL, I know that, but a lot of those people from the USA don't. They make stuff up.

I would just admit the error. Making up more stories only makes you look like you can't admit when you are wrong and that's a bad charater flaw. We all make mistakes in life and it's good to admit it and move on.

Show that you're a true professional by being honest. And there's no need to give a long, complicated explanation either (would make you seem insecure). Just say that you were mistaken, thank him for spotting the goof, you're sorry for the confusion, and not to worry because you'll be careful with making sure all words are spelled correctly going forward.

And, by the way, don't beat yourself up about it. If THIS is the most embarrassing thing that you've done lately, then you are in good shape! (I've got you beat in the "embarrassing" department ten times over!!! lol)

I would correct the mistake, and not say anything unless asked.
