Default Job searching?

I'm 19 and never had a job before I feel like I should and need to get one so I can be more independent. I've gone on two interviews before the first one.. the manger said call back so I did and he kepted on telling me to call back so I knew they didn't want me. The second one I've never had job experience before so I couldn't call them back with 2 previous jobs. I suck at interviews.. but I just apply online and it says to call back within 24 hours. When I call.. what do I say (I'm so clueless)? Do any of you have anything to recommend I really want a job to gain some experience so after I graduate into my field, my resume won't be so blank. Help girls and guys =)

"Hi, may I please speak with *insert name* (or Human Resources)?"
"Hi, how are you?"
"I'm great, thank you."
"I applied online for x position and at the end of the application it prompted me to call you for an interview."
... and just go from there.

Don't chicken out. You will never know if you're going to get a job if you cannot call the individual hiring for it.

Declared beauty gave you a great script! Call and let us know how it goes!!!!!

Oh...I know how you feel. You can do it though! They only way you'll learn how to conduct yourself during interviews is the experience of interviews. I'm in the same boat...I've had a job before, but it was just a part-time job I had during highschool and some of college, and the "interview" really wasn't an interview but the manager basically telling me I got the job and what was expected of me.

So I know how you feel, I'm very nervous about my first real interview as well. But I think we can both do it! And don't let one bad interview let you down...keep trying and GOOD LUCK!!!!

Guys, from an experienced recruiter here...don't be nervous about interviews. Remember they are a two-way street - while the potential employer is evaluating you, YOU should also be evaluating the employer! Figure out what's important to you in your job (pay, benefits, responsibilities, promotion/raise opportunities, how the job fits into your career goals, who you're reporting to, what's that person's management style, the company, what they do, customers/clients they serve, their position in the market, etc etc etc) and ask the things you want to know from them!!! This mindset may help give you some power/confidence in the process too!!

Also, please do PRACTICE ALOUD your responses to "standard" interview questions, like "What are your strengths/weaknesses?" "Why do you want this job/work at this company?", "How does your experience fit into this job?" and "What are your career goals and how does this job fit into them?"

By saying your answers to these questions aloud several times by yourself before an actual interview, you will get comfortable and able to work out the "kinks" in your delivery. By the time of an interview, you'll be able to roll these off your tongue EASILY despite any nervousness you may feel!!!

Good luck to all!!!

Might sound silly but if you're nervous there's a book called "Sink or Swim" and it gives you pointers on what to do before and during your first 12 weeks of work so you'll make it. The first 3 months are the toughest. If you make it past your first month, you're fine in reality. And the other thing is to NEVER get discouraged. Always chase a job! Eventually you might tire them out and they'll give in to you! Employers don't like quitters or people who give up easily. For strength create an alter ego. Someone with all the qualities you wish you had. Then pretend you're that person. It may sound crazy but when I was 16 I decided to go look for my first job and boy did I have a lot of butterflies in my stomach. So much I thought I was going to puke. I had short, spiky pink hair at the time and I wasn't so sure how that was going to fly over any employer out there. But I sucked it up, and came up with an imaginary character that was super and flawless in every way. Then I pretended to be that person and I got the job on the spot in the first place I walked into. I realized that confidence was the key that opened the door and gave me a chance. I've had two other jobs after that first one and those butterflies never failed to show up. I used that alter ego trick every time and so it's never let me down. Good luck and let me know if you happen to use it, if it works for you.
