Default I'm moving to NYC...

I am uprooting myself and almost everything I know.
Car, new and i love it, is going.
All apartment furnishings.
All belongings but a bunch of bags and a few shoes, winter clothes....

It makes me a little bit anxious, but mostly I am excited. I can't WAIT to go. I can't leave fast enough.

But once i am there, then what.
I mean, as of now, I am excited. I can't wait to run around the city streets, see Rockefeller Center, the Christmas lights, trees, the cold weather, the city...everything!!!!!!

But, my big but, is that I know one person. One.
Can I really just wander around the streets taking photographs, drinking in pubs, shop and meet people? I mean, am I just condemning myself to Lone Wolf Status? Can you really just go out, and meet new people?
i suppose im leaving all i have ever known. the thought mostly makes me happy. there is just that one part of me that is worrying about ending up dead in a ditch with no one to know!

So, thats my insecurity for the day.
Now, on with the day!

As a life-long, native New Yorker, let me say welcome to my city!

It's easier to meet people here than you think - contrary to popular belief, New Yorkers are friendly and with over eight million people here, you'll hardly be a lone wolf (unless you want to).

Maybe once you're here, we should try to arrange a meet with some NY-based tPFers? Not that I've met any yet, but that would get you started on making some new friends here in NYC.

Same hee. I'm also a native New Yorker and you can definitely meet people here. Definitely checkout meetup.com. They have some awesome interests groups there. Good luck on you move!

Join classes, the gym, walk your dog (if you have one) where other people walk dogs. Have fun! I'm very jealous.

Oh wow! That sounds so awesome! I've been to NYC twice and I absolutely love that city. I admire you for having the courage to do something like that. I kind of wish I had done that when I was younger and unattached. Sounds like you are about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime!!

I've been here in Manhattan for almost 7 years and would love to do a TPF meetup to welcome you to the city!

I want to first and foremost welcome you to NYC! You are gonan love it :) All the crazy people, unfriendly people, fashionistas, etc... you'll learn to love them all! I was born and raised in NYC, and I would have to say joining a gym would definitely be a great way of meeting people, people in your building, I always meet nice people at my nearby dogrun, and through that one contact you will probably meet their friends and the connections will just keep growing.

Keep posting any questions you have! and don't worry! :)

YAY!!!! I'm so excited for you that you're moving here! Such a WONDERFUL time of year to come too

You can most definitely meet people but if it helps at all...I know how you feel! I moved up here last year and I still kinda feel like I don't know anyone. I HAVE met people though, it's just not the huuuuuge close group of friends from home and small town where everyone knows your name that I'm used to! My boyfriend, who I moved here for, broke up with me, so now I feel more alone, BUT I have been making moves to do things on my own lately and I am loving it more and more. I love strolling the streets after work and the other night I went to a reading/signing at a small fiction library. It was a really cool experience and just proved to me that there are so many things in the city that I don't mind doing alone and there really is a world of possibility here! And hey, we can always be friends

I am an English woman but lived in NYC whilst working as a doctor in training for a year when I was in my early twenties and have been returning regularly ever since and I have made loads of friends even though I am a short-term, passing through person (I haven't yet ruled out another period there though when my kids are grown up). My advice is to get involved in any activity that floats your boat - whatever you love, there will be others in NYC who love it too! Get out and about, enjoy the ride, be open to experiences and I guarantee you will have a wonderful time. This is your moment - seize and cherish it!

not a nyc native, but go there ALL the time, i sometimes consider myself a newyorker even though i live in jersey. some people actually think im from staten island b/c of my accent but anyways your gonna have a blast there, idc what people say every one is sooo friendly i agree with what the other posted join a class, go to the park, walk your dog (if you dont have one you should rescue one!) and maybe even get a part time job working a couple days a week. (maybe at a coach boutique since i know you like coach! lol) your gonna have a blast and welcome to NYC.

oh and be sure to come down to seaside heights, nj in the summer maybe ill see you there one day!

How exciting! Many years ago I came from the Midwest to the Big Apple, taking only what I could carry in a few suitcases. My job moved me here. Much has changed in both the city and in myself. It was tough, but I guess I was tougher. It is easier to do when you're young and without a lot of attachments. They say that you know within a year whether you belong or not. What helped: belonging to a church, engaging in volunteer work, anything that will give you human contact.
Welcome! from a transplant in a city of transplants.
