Default I have now got the sack... no more banking job for me!
Well, with deep sorrow and regret, the bastards sacked me!

For the prople who love everything Hermes, everything handbag - you might hate what I do for my hobby... acquiring very hard to get hermes birkin and limited LV items with the pure intention to resell on eBay.

The profits I made, goes into the bags I use for myself... but unfortunately for me, I did not realise that by using Bank (the company I work for) emails, and by asking my French colleagues to place an order for me for my bags... I violated the policy on "no-outside-business-undertaking" policy at work and they booted me out the door today.

So my 6 figure salary is gone, what is left is my passion for bags, and now I think, coming to the tender age of 40 and unemployed - perhaps this is my calling. I am someone who love doing deals. I hate producing reports and raising silly recommendation to business to improve their control environment.... its really unsexy and uninteresting. I want to do something in my life... and this something is maybe business or somesort.

Tomorrow, I see my lawyer and see what I can get out of the Bank that have caged me from my passion (handbags/business) the last 22 months. In my mind I have been a committed and driven employee that got bored once in a while (and indulged in handbags). To them, I was just too colourful to be a corporate person. As good and efficient as I was at what I did, it has not worked out, and I think I now need to find my real calling in life.

For those that has supported me and given guidance, thank you.

For those that would like to meet me and buy me coffee, I am in London, please do... send me a private message. I can no longer afford Hermes now... but I will live vicariously through your postings.

In the mean time, I need to xxxx not allowed!

i don't think you're too colorful to be a corporate person, as i've known several colorful characters that were amazing corporate fixtures.

doing another job on your company's time is a big no-no. this seems like common sense. businesses (even small ones) can trace EVERYTHING you do on their watch if you're using their phones or computers, so it was not wise of you to "deal" while on the bank's clock. what happened isn't really a surprise to me.

wow sorry that happened! hopefully you land on your feet.

i work in the wall street industry too and can't believe you actually used company emails for that...one word...compliance...they read everything and anything suspicious gets flagged down and alerts them especially in this economy with regulators watching the banks.

i don't know if there is much the lawyer can do because i know my company has strict compliance policies when it comes to the company email. we have internet access and nothing is really blocked so personal emails can be used but i know lots of banks block personal email sites (i use to work for one) so no insider information can be sent out.

i wish you good luck and hope you find a new job.

Sorry you got sacked. That stinks. However, like the others have said, it's a huge no-no to do business on your other business' time. It was probably only a matter of time until they discovered it. Either way, I'm sorry you lost your job. That's never fun. Hope you get back on your feet soon and use this as a lesson for your next job.

ITA with all this. OP - I had just read your other thread. I guess at least now you know for future jobs...it's not so much the legality of what you were doing (i dont' think there's anything wrong with buying bags just to resell), but just the fact that you were using company resources to do so which was a problem.

Well, they should have first called me in when there was a concern and told me off (I would have then stopped immedaitely). Or a written warning - and all would have been fine. But no! - gross misconduct and I was out the door. Puts me in the same catagory as someone committing a very serious fraud or stealing money... my name is now mud. I will be lucky if I ever get another job anywhere ever again.

I'm surprised at the number of people here who look at websites while they are at work--huge no no for us and is a dismissable offense.

Uhm, excuse me.

The OP got sacked. Why are you all still lecturing him/her as if he/she wasn't punished enough?

Am I the only one disturbed by this?

I'm sorry you lost your job, but to blame your former employer for keeping you away from your "passion" - something you did on THEIR TIME is, quite frankly, asinine. Unless you were literally shackled to your desk 24/7, I can't imagine that you couldn't have handled your bag-business on your own time and not during business hours. If it were me, I'd drop this silly situation. Live, learn, and move on.

Good luck in your search for a new job, I hope you find something that you are passionate about.

In most businesses, this is not an offense that requires a warning--it warrants immediate termination.

ETA: I'm not trying to be mean about it--just stating what I have learned from working in the corporate world. Companies view employees doing business for themselves on company time as essentially stealing from them. That's all.

^^don't we all?? little chit chat is also using company time to do something non work related activities....anyway..at this point, it's not important.

OP, sorry of what happened. but look at it from another POV...at least you have some connections at hermes...can you use that to your advantages?? may be you can do you own business relate to handbags. or something you have passions for. it's not the end of the world...at least u r not in jail or something.

I think she acknowledged she was doing more than a little chit chat:

For people, though, when he closes the door, they're too busy to pay attention and they run smack into it.
