Sorry to hear this news, OP. I guess you just have to chalk it up to lessons learned, as painful as it is.

I wish you the best moving forward.

i think the key point here is not that she wasn't doing work when she should have been (i'll be the first to admit that I often have the tendency to slack off and browse tPF when I should be working instead ), it's that she was using company resources to make a personal profit. i'm sure at many companies, if you spent 2 hours a day just slacking off and browsing the internet (on Facebook, Youtube, tPF etc) every day, they probably wouldn't notice or care as much as if you spent 1 hour per day using company resources to make a profit for yourself. KWIM?

My company allows for occasional personal use of the company's property, internet, phones etc during the work day. As long as it doesn't impact our duties at work. However, if I can't use the company's property to solicit co-workers or for any outside work or activities. Our policy is quite clear on thing like this. We even have a policy to addressing usage of twitter, facebook, etc. I'm sure if I had done what the OP had done, I'd be out of a job.

I guess it's my age, but I always thought I was supposed to be WORKING when I was at work being paid to do so. When I was in my 20's and working (that would be over 40 years ago), making a personal phone call from ones desk was a firing offense - one was to use a pay phone on ones break time. That would be extreme today, but there is altogether too much time being spent playing around on the computer in most businesses. No wonder people have to work later hours - they waste 2-3 hrs a day doing other stuff on their computer.

You clearly still don't see that you were a less than "ideal" employ. Personally, I wouldn't hire you to do anything - you are not a dedicated, committed, ethical person.

As far as the re-selling of Hermes is concerned, while it is NOT illegal, it is really wrong. When re-sellers build up relationships with SA's and have a fleet of buyers, then regular people cannot get these bags, especially the most desirable ones. If they want them, they have to buy them from a re-seller. Frankly, I think it should fall into the same category as ticket-scalpers, and that IS illegal in many states.

What you did was wrong and I think you are now using tpf to try to give your re-selling business a boost. Wrong, wrong, wrong!!!

While its terrible to lose a job in this economy, OP you really brought it on yourself. A company doesnt have to give you any warning at all. You knew what you were doing was wrong and continued to do it anyway and they had every right to fire you.

I also agree with the above poster about Hermes. Hermes put these policies in place for a reason. While you only see it benefitting you, and whoever your reseller was, the bottom line really affects everyone. Try obeying policies, for both the company you work for as well as retailers and I bet you'd find yourself in a lot less trouble, emotionally, legally and financially.
Sorry, but I just dont have much sympathy for those that knowingly break rules and then want to cry about it when they get caught. However, I do hope you are able to find another job and move on with making right decisions from now on.

She was sort of running a business during her working hours, using her co-workers to buy for her, using her work computer, phone, etc. . .
I see your point, but do you see mine?
It was enough time on the clock to get her fired over it.

Quite. Must have been simply awful pitching up for work every day on a "six figure salary". The bastards!

I'm finding it disturbing that there doesn't seem to be a connection that something was done wrong other than blaming the business. And now looking for an attorney?

I think the majority are getting it
It sucks to lose a job, but in this case, it's really not a surprise
People are replaceable, especially if you are working on your own business while on the clock.
