I used to take the hanger off and fold them in a box. Time-consuming, but saves space in the boxes (if that is a concern). Wouldn't waste my money on those wardrobe boxes. Oh, check out Craigslist....people are always selling used moving boxes!!! Maybe you can get some cheap.

Shipping clothes....interesting idea...how much did that cost?

I've moved across country three times and had professional movers each time. They always used those boxes. You'd be surprised how much you can fit in them. I think I've always had less than 10 of them and I have a lot of clothes. You can also put things like shoes in the bottoms.

Those wardrobe boxes are great but I'd rather put that money towards furnishings for the new apt.

That's exactly how I've done it.

Annie, if you want to buy the wardrobe boxes, I would get them only for super-special clothers. And if it's anything like around here, you can usually re-sell your boxes on Craigslist, as people often don't have the time to scrounge boxes from grocery stores anymore.

i move A LOT (2-3 times a year) and i think its good to invest in those big plastic bins. we put clothes in there, and then once we unpack, we can use the bin for storage in the new apt. with clothes on hangers tho, i just take like ten-fifteen items at a time, put a hair elastic around the neck of the hanger and fold the clothes into a box, that way i dont have to waste time taking the clothes off the hanger

This looks pretty ideal (from UHAUL.com) but at $8 per box, I'd need about $800 worth of them...

this is what we used, but ours was free cause we're military. it was really easy when we moved into our new place, everything was still hanging and in place. it was quick and easy to organize our closets.

If you're using a moving company, they will provide those wardrobe boxes. If not, maybe borrow luggage from friends/family and pack clothes?

We had movers, so they used a couple of those wardrobe boxes for the things that were hanging and put the folded stuff into boxes

We pack as much of our clothes into suitcases, and hand carry the rest with hangers still on, into the car

casual clothes such as t-shirts and jeans, pj's and under garments I roll and put into a garbage bag. BIG writing on the side that says CLOTHES.... I also set in amongst the boxes so it doesn't get tossed, As for dress clothes, I fold them and put them in a box, I find just leaving them on the hangers and tossing them into the car then end up all over. what you might think about getting if you own a car is the rod that hangs on those hooks in the back seat. This way you can hang the dressy stuff there for the short trip.

Me too. The garbage bag actually offers protection from stuff that may fall on it during the chaos of moving.

We always just left the hanging stuff on the hangers and layed them in the back of the car.
