Default Holiday Retail Job?
Anyone worked retail over the holidays? My DH is laid off and I am thinking of looking for temporary work over the holidays at Macy's or another store. Anyone have any advice? What is the typical hourly pay? I know Macy's gives an employee discount, but do other stores typically do that too for holiday help?

I'd love to hear your experiences!
Thanks

I am seasonal in a jewelry store and have been there for 3 years. I did well, so I stay on throughout the year and I really enjoy it, so it is a win, win. I have no idea where you live to tell you about pay, but it depends what kind of a back ground you have. Do you have any retail, restaurant or customer service in your resume? These are usually good things since it shows you can deal with people, especially the difficult ones. My discount is very generous. On top of the hourly, I do get a small commission, which is nice, but they pay me fairly decent on top of that. Also, the bigger stores, such as Macy's hire a LOT and go NOW. They want you ready for the day after Thanksgiving. Just remember, you'll be working the weekends and the early mornings right after the actual holiday as well as late nights to set up for the next morning.

PM me if you have any more questions and I'll try to help.

I worked holidays at different retail stores, and I have to say that working at Pier 1 was my favorite. It's a really relaxed atmosphere.

my friend worked in a department store (dillards) during the holidays a couple years ago in their gift wrapping department. she really enjoyed it. plus the pay at dillards is pretty generous in comparison to other retail stores, i think.

I, myself would never work retail during the holidays. I worked in retail for 7+ years and although it wasn't a chain store so we didn't get the brunt of things, i don't think i could handle the holidays in another retail environment. if yo'ure hired specifically for holiday then you'll probably be required most special holiday hours

this probably doesn't matter at all but it just popped into my head that i gave wrong information. my friend didn't work at dilards, she worked at von maur. Von Maur's pay rate is pretty high.

I worked Macy's during the holidays once. I loved it. My mother got a holiday job there this year to help the family business stay afloat, the pay here is around $7.45 an hour or something like that. You will work a lot--when I worked there I was part-time but during the holidays I worked 40-50 hours a week some weeks.

I worked retail as a teen at Old Navy and they hired a lot of seasonal workers. It was just minimum wage but anything is better than nothing!

Well i applied for one at old navy last year and was hired and was told i'd be paid 7.25 a hour but when she told me i'd have to be at work at 3-4 am on christmas eve and work 10+ hours that day i said no thank you. Thats a really crappy job to have to have plus no matter what they say after christmas you are gone, it's very unlikely they will keep you after xmas.
