i live 15 minutes away from the beach have grown up "a beach kid." where i live in nj, i didn't know the phrase "down the shore" til college- it was simply "going to the beach." when people cut class in high school, they went to the beach. we also have a strong sense of pride and belonging, like the beach is ours. i have lots of friends from north jersey, but sorry - we hate the bennies. so, i have strong attachments to it and feel like it's part of who i am
i understand the whole "it's sweaty, hot, you have to bring alot of stuff" thing. this is my take on it:
it's not dirty, it's actually cleansing. salt water and sand are great exfoliators

it's not like mud or dirt at all, and if the beach you are at is clean, you can really feel like you are in tune with nature the whole time.
there's something freeing about lugging all of that stuff with you, and once you get there, you really know that all you need is a bathing suit and your body. that's it. just you and the elements around you - air, water and sand. it feels like you are more in touch with yourself and your only obligation at that time is to just *be*. also - watching the tides change, the sun move in the sky, the people relaxing - you feel like you are at another place entirely. i LOVE laying on the ground, listening to the vibrations in the sand as people walk, look over at my boyfriend, and see him all sandy and shiny from sunblock, and just shut our eyes and tune out/tune in whatever we want. then going in the water and feeling like you are a part of something bigger than the mundane-ness and bs of life - like you can just be in the ocean and think about how big it is. it's awesome. i LOVE going to bed at night and still feeling like i'm tumbling under the water, or feel sand in my sheets

it's like your little secret - a whole other place you can escape to.
i've been in the water at night (not skinny dipping but in underwear, lol) and it was so amazing to be in the ocean at night time. it's like knowing that anything can be in the water- whatever fish, animals - but you're still safe. i have alot of trust in the ocean. it's been around awhile, and it's a part of our world - a great alternative to cars and all the shit we have made on land.
so, that's my take on it. i LOVE the jersey shore (not the bennies, though, but the quieter and cleaner beaches) - i love campfires on the beach, guitar at night ... LOOOOVE it and actually miss it because the damn traffic in my town is terrible in the summer from all the people who DON'T live here, going "down the shore" uuughhh.
there are also lots of songs i associate with the beach - driving over the bridge over the bay that leads you to the ocean, in a convertible with the music up
dashboard - hands down
saves the day - this is not an exit
blue october - in the ocean
moby - porcelain
sugar ray - spinning away
3eb- motorcycle driveby
ahh, my teens, lol. watch
the beach with leo dicaprio, too. it's great
