Default Gift Suggestions for relatives in Asia?
Hi Ladies..
I'm going to Asia to visit family, and I usually bring gifts with me. In the past, I always brought things like Bath & Body Works, Perfume sets, and one year Tiffany & Co necklaces.. I was aiming for something they don't sell in Asia (which is almost impossible lol..)

I have no idea what to bring this time. Do you girls have any suggestions on what type of gifts you would want to receive?

I have a lot of cousins, and I don't really know who I will be seeing. So, I'll need a more impersonal gift.. just something that can work for everyone.

My ideal price range is anything between $10-100ish

Hollister isn't available in Asia. Perhaps you can get them some clothing from there.

Anything not made in the country you're going to. My relatives in Taiwan love things that are "Made in the U.S.A.". As for your price range, hmm...something that you don't need to know the sizes of the people to give...SNACKS!! I know it's cheap, but give them something they cant get there...certain kinds of chocolates or candy..I don't know if they sell Teuscher(Switzerland) there, but if they do, it's probably very expensive...hope this helps and good luck!!

Something local - i.e., nuts (but heavy in suitcase).

My friends in Japan just loved microwave popcorn, jerky, jellybellies, and fruit roll ups - go figure.

I agree with those above, toiletries are also nice - stuff from BBWorks or the Body Shop.

Well... my relatives from Hong Kong always goes to Abercrombie because its not available over there (unless they opened a store over there recently). Another thing they like to buy a lot when they come here are towels, they claim the quality is a lot better over here.

I also have a friend who told me when she went to India to visit relatives her cousin wanted makeup because she said there were a lot of fakes.

So I guess it depends on where in Asia you are going...

Thanks girls for your all your suggestions!!

I will be visiting Taiwan.
Ages range from 18 - 35?
Majority Female.. but there are a few male cousins

I completely forgot.. A&F/Hollister is very popular in Asia! I sort of boycotted that store, so it didn't even cross my mind. Maybe I'll break my ban this one time..

Btw, is Victoria's Secret popular or known in Asia? My relatives don't visit the states, so they're not that familiar with the chains here. They've never seen B&BW products.

This one time I brought back B&BW lotions, my cousin tried the lotion and thought it smelled like candy.. but in a bad way! She felt like ants were going to come and eat her skin bc of its heavy scent.

pursemania - that's hilarious! I didn't expect that anyone in japan would want our snacks! I'll go scour the markets for some popular childhood snacks.

panda_usc -Teuscher! my friends here love that too. I'm just worried that it'll melt.

Laria - I'm surprised they would want towels! I feel like majority of towels sold in the states are fairly thick. With the humidity in Asia, it would talk forever to dry! I'll keep that one in mind though.

Thanks again everyone! If you have any other ideas, please post! I always run into this dilemma when I go back..

"American" brands of candy (Hershey's especially). These types of gifts are very well received by people living in the various countries throughout Asia in my personal experience.

My relatives in Taiwan love A&F, Hollister, Levi's (it's way cheaper here but I think the quality is different, especially the boys!).

Lees and Levi's quality overseas is way better, but also more pricey there. Atleast thats what I've noticed.

Dunno where your locale is, but I try to bring something local/US made when I go home to Japan. When I lived in Boulder, I bought a ton of Celestial Seasoning tea, and that was a hit because blended herbal tea isn't that huge there. (Plus the boxes have cute illustrations, and they're light in your luggage!)

Now that I'm in Seattle, I get local organic chocolates (Theo or Fran's -- Fran's salted caramels are the Obamas' favorite candies, so that's always a hit), berry teas, jams and honey from NW. I think Victoria Secret bath & body stuff may or may not be too strong smelling for folks in Asia...depending on your audience of course.
