Talking Ever feel like your brain is sitting idle?

This might sound really stupid to some of you, but sometimes I just have the urge to pick up a text book (yes, I have some of those laying around from my school days) and just refresh my memory by reading through it and even learn something new along the way. I feel like in the past couple of years my brain has just sat idle since Im not in school(which I've had the urge to enroll for a few years now, just seriously havent had the time, I know I need to MAKE time. No lectures please). I truly miss that feeling of learning and the knowledge that comes with going to school everyday.

Anyway, my point to this thread (besides asking if anyone feels like I do) is to ask if any of you have any websites to share that are just full of knowledge? Come on, I knwo there are some teachers out there with some useful sites! I would love to sit back a few hours of the day and read some interesting websites (if tPF will let me). Im really interested in ANYTHING, any class you took in school, thats what interests me. I just got done reading through a whole book on Biology, a book that I studied when I was in 9th grade!

Am I a certified nerd for starting this thread?

That makes two certified nerds now! I love going through my old textbooks. Most of the time I will research a topic of interest on the internet, or watch NatGeo and the Discovery Channel whenever I feel the need to learn lol.

I don't have any specific sites that I go to, just whatever happens to pop up on the topic I'm researching.

I read Wikipedia for fun. Not always the most accurate, but I like the search format.

I know what u mean! I'm still in limbo about applying to a Master's program. I feel like I'm not ready yet, but in the meantime, I feel like my brain is so idle because I haven't read a textbook since forever, and that's why I keep reading books(some really ready books and some light reading here and there) cause I was hoping it would help stimulate brain cells. I try to read newspapers but I just hate the papers they use so I go onto CNN, watch the discovery channel, and that other channel that always has those modern marvel things. who knew architecture could be so interesting?
Even that show "are u smarter than a 5th grader" helps a little but sometimes I feel so stupid when I can't answer a question.

I've tried reading the GRE books and taking some online tests. even did some practice SATs test eventhough that was done and over with.

I've been trying to read my French textbooks again to refresh the language skills.

But seriously, reading my old textbooks sometimes scare me cause I can't freaking remember some of it.

I try to read up things that I wouldn't even normally think of.

Pretty much anything to make me feel that my brain cells are being stimulated intellectually.

My books range from classic literature to chick lit, so when I want a brain boost, I'll pick up a classic.

Right now I'm reading The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde.

i was going to suggest digg as well, it gives a pretty good cross section of the news going on at any given time, both serious and non-serious.

I really like the Gawker Media blog network - gawker.com, jezebel.com, defamer.com, all kinds of sites. They update dozens of times per day on a variety of subject, some serious and intellectual and some silly and gossipy.

Oh, God! When I was a kid, I used to sit on Saturday or Sunday and read the old encyclopedia set that we had on our bookshelves.......Now, I go to www.space.com.
Now, that's interesting!!!

I know my brain is sitting idle, I am so much thicker now than I was 10 years ago. Sometimes I think about digging out some of my university Maths stuff to give myself a brain workout, then I think nah, can't be bothered, plus if I really think about it, it scares me just how bad my memory is.
I'll check out digg.com though, looks interesting and very random... (and I don't have to leave my chair)

I know exactly what you mean. I'm a college graduate, but I don't work anymore as I'm a SAHM surrounded by small children. Sometimes I feel like I'm getting dumber by the minute! Like Caitlyn, I read classic literature. Not only does it help keep the ol' brain sharp but the long, Russian novels can sure cure insomnia. A couple pages of War and Peace and I'm out like a light!
