Let's imagine the store that not only has unruly children in it but has aggressive dogs in it also. It would be a nightmare, a dangerous one.
My fear of allowing pets in stores is the health and safety aspect - what of the people who don't immunise their pets? Don't use flea and worm control? What of the people who have an uncontrollable Dobermann, Great Dane or heaven forbid, Pit Bull? There are owners who really shouldn't be owners and if all dogs are allowed in stores, that means the good and the bad and that's a scary thought.
i was just responding to the comments that many people made re: dogs being unruly, loud, dirty etc and how "there is really no reason for them to be at a boutique" etc...i was just trying to say that the exact same things can be said about children, yet that of course is no reason to ban them from boutiques. I get annoyed having to listen to a screaming 2 year old running around in a store, but i'm not proposing that children be banned from stores! so i was just saying that the fact that some people may get personally bothered by seeing someone take their dog into a boutique, that alone is not reason enough for them to be disallowed from stores IMO.

and i totally agree the health and safety aspect is a legitimate concern, that's why i totally understand if dogs are a not allowed in supermarkets, doctors offices, restaurants and the like. i was just responding to people's comments about how they didn't think dogs should be allowed in boutiques because they "didn't see the need for them to be there" or that they personally "didn't like being around dogs". IMO comments like that don't seem valid enough to warrant a store policy. i personally don't see the need for people to wear 5 gallons of perfume, or for people to do their shopping right after a 2 hour workout, covered in sweat..yet i don't think that is enough to impose restrictions on what people are allowed to wear while they shop, KWIM?

No, see here's the difference... Stores are for humans and children are human. Dogs are not. A child cannot be left at home unsupervised. A dog can.

Everyone keeps saying these arguments against dogs in stores are invalid... well give me one good reason why dogs should be allowed in stores. Why should people go shopping with their dogs? What is so wrong with leaving a dog home for an hour or two to sleep while you shop??

I was shopping on Rodeo this morning with a friend and we were in Hermes and my dogs who are always in their stroller when shopping. There were 2 small kids that were having fun petting them and I was over at the counter and the SA was like" OMG where are your dogs" she could not see them. I pointed to them and she just laughed. The father thanked me, so his wife could shop and the 2 year old was very happy. As soon as we left the kid started screaming. I could hear her outside.

I am so happy Los Angeles is a VERY dog friendly city. The Wells Fargo bank I go to has dog treats at each of the tellers window. A large percentage of the stores have dog bowls with water outside. Dogs in stores in Beverly Hills and West Hollywood is very common.

I think if a dog bites someone that the OWNER NOT THE BUSINESS should be responsible.

That is one thing I don't really have to worry about. My older one has very few teeth left. My little one, her teeth are so tiny, I don't thing she could break skin. They have never shown any aggression toward anyone.

Ahh...Oak Street in Chicago...

I get my hair cut/colored at a salon there, and I'm amazed at how many women bring their dogs with them. The dogs jump on the cushioned benches meant for seating the customers. Heck, I own a dog, but this disturbs me that dog's paws/mouth are making contact with a seat that I (or someone else...or a child) will sit on and touch with my hands. Sorry, but I think dogs should not be allowed anywhere unless they are a service dog.

I mean, what's next? Cats? Rabbits? Snakes?? What is your definition of a pet?

Mine too. But not for the same reasons that's your's is boiling.

I think this thread has gone to the dogs and should be either closed or lightened up before it goes further south.

C'mon people! Dogs and Kids are BOTH here to stay! If you don't like the policies that some stores or any place for that matter, has about allowing either, then don't patronize that place! Vote w/your money!

Whenever there are threads regarding kids/pets things get nasty unfortunately. Live and let live. This thread isn't going to change anyone's opinions. It's ok. No need to fuss about it. Noone will ever completely agree on anything. Dogs will still be allowed here and there, some people will like it, some won't. No worries ladies. Us arguing here won't change the world.

If only it was that easy!

I'd take my cat, but he's worse than the dog really. Little monster! He does like his harness though...

It honestly doesn't bother me one bit to see a dog in a store. However, I can understand the other side, exp. if someone is allergic to dogs. I know I'm allergic to dogs (but still have one, and love them ), but long haired dogs can really get to me and make me feel completely miserable.
