a dog is not a human being, end of story.

The higher end malls around here are almost all dog friendly. They even had little water break areas for them with water pumps and self-serve poop bags. The stores in the mall that are dog friendly identify themselves with little stickers in the window, and both Saks and Louis Vuitton welcome well-behaved dogs in the stores.

It doesnt matter whether a dog is a human being or not, and I dont think anyone is debating that. The "End of Story" is whether the shop owners allow it or not. If they do great, if not then that is fine too. THAT is the end of story...THEY have the final say!

floridasun, i was commenting on the whole dogs vs humans thing that was going on in the previous few pages, not that a dog can't be in a store because it isn't a human. i have said previously, i am not bothered by dogs being in stores as long as the dog owners are respectful of people and stores that are bothered by it.

I had not expected this kind of debate, so thanks everyone for their input. The reason I asked this is I have been in stores and have seen flecks of fur on articles and refuse to buy it. Just last Christmas I was looking at beautiful black and red cashmere sweater and was about to buy it until I looked closer and saw flecks of hair and it was some type of dog hair. Too coarse to have been cat hair. And I know the difference between human hair and dog hair. And the hair is going to fly and get on other stuff no matter how well-groomed your dog maybe. And I don't want my dogs hair on my own clothings and I love them dearly so I know a stranger doesn't want my dogs hair on their clothings because they don't feel the same way about my babies as I feel about them. Which is why I say they couldn't be allowed in stores.

I was ticked off big time about the hair on the sweater because I had the perfect pants and boots to match this sweater and had been looking for something to complete this outfit since early November.

Actually if you shop in a place where dogs are allowed, you may not know it but your dogs can tell and will come sniffing what you brought.

I'm slightly dog phobic but as long as the dog was well behaved I wouldn't have a problem with it.

I'm in Toronto and and any of the boutiques along Bloor Street and Yorkville are dog friendly. I've brought BOTH of my shih tzus in the (flagship) Holt Renfrew, Gucci and LV. The suburban malls aren't as dog friendly though. Ironic.

I'm a bit puzzled as to why anybody would want to bring a dog shopping with them in the first place.

My DH and I (and of course our 2 dogs) went to Santa Barbara, CA today. OMG, I have never seen soooooooooo many people with dogs shopping, along State Street. I must have seen over 100 dogs in the 4 hours we were there. Everything from 2 pound chihuahua's to 100 pound dogs. It was great. Not one problem. Even saw tons of dogs on the patios of all the restaurants. It was great. I had such a nice day. I just wish it was not 100 miles away.

Sometimes, I wish that I could take my dog into the local convenience store with me, or at least stand near the door with him. My hubby, the dog, and I went for a run tonight and then needed to stop at the local convenience store for some bread for dinner (we tried making mahi mahi sandwiches). My poor hubby had to stand in the 98-degree weather while I waited in a 20-minute line for some bread. It would have been nice if he and the dog could have stayed inside of the doors while they waited.

I never feel the need to take the dog shopping with me specifically, but if I need to run into a store for one thing and I've been walking him, I hate leaving him tied up outside of the store.

Although I haven't read this entire thread, I will say that a high-end store is NO place for misbehaving dogs or children.

I edited this original post because I've been on call and I'm not in a very good mood. I didn't want to get the thread closed and I made some not-so-nice comments about sarcasm. Goodnight!

As a shop owner I do not allow animals in the store. I don't feel I have lost any customers due to the rule. Here you can get shut down if the health dept make a friendly visit without notice and see animals among things humans wear or eat.

The health manual they give you for not allowing them in clothing and accessory stores is they can carry fleas and other small things like mites and the owners may not being aware of it and these parasites can embed themselves in clothing and other items and be passed on to unsuspecting visitors. So to prevent all the trouble of dodging the health dept. because here they don't play about this, if they catch you, they will revoke your license and will close your store, I don't allow them in and every store I know of have to follow this rule. Some stores have been fined for violating this and the managers fired for allowing it. A lot of places started this a few years back after there was an outbreak of tick fever a few years ago in Colorado.

If a dog is in a store you will more than likely not gain my business, sorry dog lovers, I'm yet to meet someone who tells me that my child makes them itch so bad they want to rip their skin off, unless it's allergy season I have nothing for my triggers so I'll be itchy and in a bad mood.

Oh yeah this is one of those topics for me, I have a friend who thinks her dog is a kid, I don't buy that BS cause my kid hasn't attempted nipped anyone or chased her ass until she peed my floor.
