Responding to a prevous ?: no, there is no reason that dogs SHOULD be allowed on stores. Once again, I can make the same argument for kids, going shopping right after working out, etc.
A lot of things SHOULD NOT be done, but they are.

Responding to ^: I don't think I live in lala land and try to emulate celebrities that bring their dogs everywhere.
I work full time, as does my husband, so when we have free time on the weekend to go shopping and can bring our dogs, why not? It's not a fashion statement by any means. We obviously won't take them into a store that sells food or where it expressly says that dogs are forbidden.

(And I will admit that I'm more favorable to stores that are pet friendly)

Not everyone can have 5 acres, or even a smaller amount of property.

And yes, I honestly do think our dogs are quite happy coming with us. They're not in a "cage" since we let them walk and then pick them inside of a store, they receive lots of positive attention from children and adults alike, they get treats, they get socialized and great experience, etc.

Not everyone is trying to be like Paris Hilton. DH and I are just trying to spend as much time with our dogs as posible. Surely no one can say that's a bad thing.

There will never be a general concensus and everyone will have different opinions. I, for one, will take my dogs to pet-friendly shopping centers for as long as I can.
ITA and bring my dogs out with me sometimes for the same reasons.

Hope I didn't offend you! Just making the point that when one goes out in public, there are a variety of thing (not just dogs) that are allowed but may be annoying or unpleasant.

Places babies/very young kids should not go but parents still bring them.... The movies. Come on everyone hates a crying kid in an adult movie. High end restaurants, and concerts. Kids ears are not meant for super loud music. I see it all the time. I went to a concert and there was a very young baby with no ear protection, the stupid mother put a blanket over it's ears. Like that is going to help.

They directly affect the dining experience of other customers.
This is my subjective opinion however- and as such not something I think should be regulated by law.
While I have the viewpoint that dogs should not be taken into stores, I also agree that children should be taken out of a restaurant if they are disruptive. But children are PEOPLE. Restaurants are meant for people, so are clothing shops. These places are not meant for dogs. A child is a person and has a right to go to a restaurant, but should be removed, just like anyone else, who cannot behave. Now, I also think that some places are just not meant for children, like very fancy parties, formal occasions for adults, etc. There are just some places not meant for certain things for good reasons. I just find it sad that dog owners who insist on taking their dogs shopping do not respect people who may be allergic and cannot tolerate being in a confined place with an animal. People should be able to shop without being affected by dogs. I agree with Claire- there is just no good reason to take your dog into a store. So what if the "dog loves it" and enjoys being around people? That doesn't mean they should be there. There are plenty of other places to take the dog outdoors.

2 things come to mind reading this thread--those of you that don't like dogs in stores, don't move to France--they are allowed everywhere if they are well behaved--upscale department stores/brasseries/bistros/LV/Chanel, etc.

Also someone was talking about dirty women's restroom and someone else dirty dogs.

Quiz-- what bite is more likely to get infected--a human bite or dog bite?? You guessed it--human bite--your mouth is dirtier than a dogs.

And not to completely change the subject, but cat bite is the worst--not cat scratch. About 75% of cat bites get infected--carry bacteria pasturella in their mouths.

Yes, my DH has ended up going to emergency 2 times for cat bites never for a dog bite (he works at an animal hospital)

But dogs are open about where they lick, they don't hide it. We can't really be sure of what people are actually licking these days.

Actually, If you've had a baby, then you would know that newborns don't have schedules. It may seem odd, but the eat and sleep whenever they need to. They sleep off and on around the clock, which means that normal bed time hours typically don't apply. I remember just trying to keep my two kids awake as long as possible at night when they were newborns (sometimes 10 or 11) because that was just one less feeding to wake up for.

I really don't understand all of this talk about kids anyways? This is a thread about dogs. Dogs are not people. Kids are. I don't see the comparison. As I've mentioned before, my dog is amazing and he's a wonderful part of our family. He licks his butt, eats deer poop in the yard, and rolls in whatever smelly, dead things he can find in the yard. He does these things because he's a dog and that's what dogs do. Stores, restaurants, etc. are not made for dogs, they are made for people.

PetSmart is made for dogs...they even have critter-accident aisle clean-up stations, which I have made use of many a time Cat owners should be upset because Petsmart is clearly all about the pups!

I'm just joking, just trying to lighten things up :)

Where there's a dog discussion, a kid discussion is sure to follow...it just happens!

If the owners of a store are comfortable with having a dog in the store, I'm all for it. I love visiting this framing shop here that has 2 dogs and a cat as mascots. There's also a printing place here with it's resident dachshund.

I also keep my dog on a short leash when we're out. I'm terrified if taking him off of it. I'm one owner who can't be accused of letting my dog poop and pee on everything unattended, or letting him run off the leash.

Just found this from this older (2007) CBS News Story:

Americans care about pets more than ever today. Nearly two-thirds - 63 percent - of households have a pet, and pet lovers spent $38.5 billion on their pets in 2006, up from $21 billion a decade earlier. According to the Census Bureau, in the last decade, the percentage of homes with pets has remained relatively stable, but the amount of money people spend on pets has doubled. We spend several billion dollars more on dog and cat food than on baby food.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/...n3234187.shtml

According to that article, pet people are spenders! That may be why some stores are pet friendly...they'll get more $$$ on selling fancy dog collars, strollers, beds etc. It may be a stretch, but hey, I'm buying it, pun intended :)
