Default Do you report things when you dont agree with something on TPF?

I am curious about this. I noticed some threads being closed over certain things and I just wonder (since the mods cant get to everything as they say) if people see something and turn into the

Yes, the mods actually rely on members to report posts that are in violation of the rules here, because there are only a handful of them that have the power to close or delete a thread.

Not really, since it is not against the rules to disagree with me and therefore be wrong.

I "reported" a post about a news story once because there was absolutely no way that anyone, regardless of their opinion, could make any comment about any aspect of it without it being a political discussion.

Reporting something because you don't agree with it is different to reporting something because it violates tPF rules.

When I read the title of this thread, I wanted to say that the mods don't close a thread if there are differing opinions. I'm sure some people contact a mod if they don't agree with what is being said, but having different opinions is not against the rules. However, if people start being mean and disrespectful, they will close that thread.

I have seen threads closed over nothing that was against the rules but hey if a mod feels the need for it to be closed it will be.

I think some people take things a little to personal by just reading sometimes...and they are off to run and "tell it" rather than be an adult. I dont know, I just dont get it sometimes.

Yep. I'd never report something because I disagreed with it.

Threads are closed either because someone has broken some rule (talking about politics, for example) or if it's clear that the thread is going to hell in a handbasket.

(Or if it's a duplicate of something someone else has already posted.)

I have reported a post that was clearly spam.

I think I posted a thread once about a place to get a bag and someone who works for a store didnt like the fact that i was telling ladies to go somewhere else because those are sales that person could be getting from us. he reported it and it was closed! i didnt post the thread in the proper place, but it was not big deal. stuff like that to me is just ugly. so i posted it in the proper place, and my point was still made.

I am pretty sure people do, although the only posts I have ever reported were fake spam or pyramid scheme spam.

If I see a political comment in an otherwise unrelated post I will PM the poster and tell her that the thread will most likely be closed if the political comment isn't edited.

Exactly.

DON'T report something if you just don't agree with it - we're not here to moderate opinions. Opinions are not against the rules and we won't stop people from expressing theirs on almost any non-political, non-religious issue.

DO report things that violate or might violate rules. We can't and don't read every post, and we'll miss a lot of things if our members don't use the resources available to them if they see something that they think violates our rules.

What happens when a member reports a post is that all of the moderators that have the ability to alter things in that section are sent an email. That's the best way to get in touch with the right people when a post, topic, avatar, or signature violates the rules because it also gives us a link back to the post or member that is potentially creating the problem.

Only the admins and globals - megs, vlad, myself, swanky, cristina, and pradas meadow - have the ability to alter signatures and avatars, no matter what section, so it may take longer for those things to be corrected.

Reporting posts is particularly important during this contentious political climate - absolutely no political posturing of any kind is tolerated, and the best way to have it removed is to report the post. If you see the post, don't report it, and then get mad when it's still there the next day - you're part of the problem. There's a little button at the bottom of EVERY post that allows any member to report them, and I encourage you all to use it when appropriate.

If you didn't post the thread in the right section, then that's why the thread was closed. Our rules are simple on that. It doesn't matter who reported it, if you're in violation of the publicly-posted rules, then that's your issue.

Also, if you suspected that a poster was attempting to divert attention to their employer or store, you should have contacted a moderator, since that's against the rules as well. Handling these things in an organized manner is the only way to keep track of what's going on around here for us since we receive over 13,000 new posts EVERY DAY.
