And to answer your original question - I wake up every morning to somewhere between 30 and 60 emails generated from reported posts on the board and then get dozens upon dozens more throughout the day. So yes, people DO report things, and it's very important that they do.

I'd like to add, sometimes a thread is closed, and maybe to the members, it's for no apparent reason, but there's always a reason.
For example, if no rules are broken but it's closed anyways it's probably because the OP asked us to clsoe it.
This actually happens more often than people realize.
We don't always make an explanation why, but there's always a valid reason.
We're far too busy to be closing threads for no reason.

edited to add:
as for reporting posts just because someone disagrees?
Sure, some members absolutely do that, but we review every report and we choose whether or not any action needs to be taken.

Really it wasnt a big issue. I started a thread in my "home" forum about this great store, and that person didnt like it point blank because of less sales. The person posted "I dont see what this has to do with ****" and then reported it. I dont think a mod would have closed it had the person not made an issue out of nothing. But like I said it only a few minutes to mvoe my post and say the same thing so no big deal. I think once I asked a question in marc jacobs about a bag I was unsure of, and it was closed because i didnt ask the question in the right place. I mean, things like that to me are silly. Someone else my not mind replying to a post not posted in the right place. To close it was a waste, and I havent been back since.

Also, if you suspected that a poster was attempting to divert attention to their employer or store, you should have contacted a moderator, since that's against the rules as well. Handling these things in an organized manner is the only way to keep track of what's going on around here for us since we receive over 13,000 new posts EVERY DAY.

DO report things that violate or might violate rules. We can't and don't read every post, and we'll miss a lot of things if our members don't use the resources available to them if they see something that they think violates our rules.

What happens when a member reports a post is that all of the moderators that have the ability to alter things in that section are sent an email. That's the best way to get in touch with the right people when a post, topic, avatar, or signature violates the rules because it also gives us a link back to the post or member that is potentially creating the problem.

Only the admins and globals - megs, vlad, myself, swanky, cristina, and pradas meadow - have the ability to alter signatures and avatars, no matter what section, so it may take longer for those things to be corrected.

Reporting posts is particularly important during this contentious political climate - absolutely no political posturing of any kind is tolerated, and the best way to have it removed is to report the post. If you see the post, don't report it, and then get mad when it's still there the next day - you're part of the problem. There's a little button at the bottom of EVERY post that allows any member to report them, and I encourage you all to use it when appropriate.
I agree with that!

I only report spams (hate them) & people trying to sell stuff on the threads they open.

I believe thats all done in the spirit of trying to keep things organized otherwise it would just be a free-for-all in here. Perhaps someone else might have the same question you have and if they do a search and you posted in the right place, it will come up for them.

That only happens in certain forums though. I am gonna be honest. Some forums and the people there have major attitudes to the point of no return. I stay out of certain ones because they make up "rules" about everything, and some say do this, dont do that, read this, blah blah, and I just think its a bit much. I never deal with that kind of crap in my "home" forum. Some people get on here and regulate like they are getting a freaking check. Its not that serious, for real. I want to say, chill out! But rather than that, I just wont return.

I report only when it's newbies trying to spam/advertise when they shouldn't be.

Are you seriously making an issue out of a moderator closing a thread that you freely admitted violated the rules? Because that's kind of a waste of your time, IMO. We get 13,000 new posts a day here, and if we let everyone post them wherever they felt like, no one would ever be able to find anything. It doesn't matter if some people may not mind replying to a post that's not in the right place - if the post doesn't belong where you put it, it's going to be dealt with in order to keep the board organized. No matter what that person's motivations were, your post violated rules. Simple. If you wish not to follow the rules, then as your last post said - simply don't return. I mean, you do have free will here, and the rules are publicly posted and you agree to them when you register. We certainly want everyone to keep posting here, but posting things in the right section is a very simple request on the part of the moderators, and if you take such enormous issue with it, then perhaps you want to reconsider whether this is the correct place for you.

And if you see a member behaving suspiciously - trying to clandestinely drive sales to their employer, for one - then PM a mod or report their posts. I assure you that that member will be dealt with to the best of our ability if we can find proof that what you suspect is true.

I don't report a post just because I don't like the poster's opinion. I only report posts that are clearly spam, advertising, or break the rules.

Im going to agree with u on ONE point only. There r some areas that certain long time posters are a bit too agressive to newbies about posting in correct areas.Rest assured,im WATCHING and working on it.
Only a moderator has the right to tell u where not to post etc..but members do try to help sometimes and come off a bit strong without meaning to.but they mean well!
but if u posted in the correct area,u need to follow the rules.WITHOUT these rules, this place would be a mess to navigate. The pf is like a big family,we all try to help out and keep it organized.so its not a big free for all.and yes, moderators do all this in their free time.so if we miss something(we do have families,jobs,etc!)..PLEASE use the REPORT button.it helps us a great deal......we gets TONS of spammers here so without u guys reporting them,we would have a mess!

I'll agree that members need to lay off the aggressiveness to other members and EVERYONE needs to follow protocol - if it needs to be dealt with, don't berate someone in the thread, tell a MOD by reporting the post. Berating someone won't get their thread moved/closed/whatever any more quickly.

I don't report anything unless it is an advertiser or what I think is a troll. I leave the aggressive and insulting posts to the moderators.
