Well, if you're up for a bit of light reading, I can't recommend this edition enough:
Amazon.com: Tales from Ovid: Books: Ted Hughes

It's very well done. Something you can pick up, read a section, and put down for weeks before continuing on.

I love mythology :) I've also read some manga that has dealt with it heavily..I love the stories involving the gods and goddesses and how they are so fallible (sp?)

I love mytholodgy. What really made me take a liking to it, was when I took a myth & culture class in college. I had to buy Joseph Campbell tapes, and when I watched them was so intrigued. I could have returned the tapes at the end of the semester and gotten my money back, but I just had to keep them.

I sold my other books back to the bookstore. I had to keep my mythology books.

My apartment has a glassed-in coffee table, so I put my encyclopedia of mythology as well as my illustrated dictionary of mythology under the glass as coffee table books.

It is so cool to see others whose interest in this began in childhood! You may find that your interest in the eshcatological aspects of the Greek and Roman pantheon begin to blossom into an interest in global, historical, and comparative theology, if it has not already!

It is fascinating to discover how the different traditions, including the western Abrahamic triple whammy, evolved, and the fundamental concepts shared by all!

I found this thread again!

The majority of the days of the week come from Norse mythology:

Monday comes from Mani, a moon goddess.

Tuesday comes from Tyr, the god of single combat and heroic glory.

Wednesday comes from Wodan or Odin, the chief god, similar to the way Zeus is in Greek mythology.

Thursday comes from Thor, the god of thunder.

Friday comes from Frigg, the wife of Odin.

Sunday comes from an old English word translating to "Day of the sun."

Saturday comes from the Roman god Saturn, similar to the Titan Cronus who was the father of Zeus.

Check out Wikipedia's pages for more information on this stuff.

Yeap, love the ancient myths (Greek, Chinese, Indian, Mayans, Pagans, Celtic, Viking etc. etc.). From Hercules, Guanyin legend to the Chinese fairies, Kali's destructions to Shiva's reincarnations, the Ramayanas, The Popol Vuh, The Dagda to the elves, Thor, Ra, Isis, Anubis, Bast..... I so dig & adore mythology since as far back as I could read (I also have a bad reading habit where I can finish a novel that interest me in a day)! Majored in ancient histories, literature & cultures in my secondary school years.

My fav. is still the Egyptian myth(thus my avatar)!

----------------------------------------------------------
Love Mummy I & Mummy II, think Mummy III is taken wayyyyy out of context
(a mummy is no longer a mummy if in China, got to use the Chinese pronounciation of the preserved bodies {which there aren't many, they cremate most & things that don't rot become "Jiang-shi"} or it has to be in Egypt) as much as I like Jet Li. :P

Yes, the Iliad is one of my all-time favorite books! I'm constantly re-reading it. And of course, the Odyssey, the Aeneid....etc etc, lol. I don't get into the little short stories as much, like the first couple things you posted that offer "explanations" to random things, but I do enjoy the longer works.
