My dad is a HUGE photography freak... he uses a D1x but recently sold it and is upgrading, I think. I love taking photos too, but more for fun.

I am not going to open a new thread but to use Vlad's thread for my question.

I am looking for a digital camera which is good to shoot sports pictures (so it needs to make quite of many shots per second, a SLR maybe?) also good to shoot close-up photos of showing details. I know this kind of camera can easily go beyond $5,000 with good lens. I am hoping to limit the whole set within $1,000. Does anyone have any good suggestions? Or I am asking too much?

Sorry! I am a camera idiot so please bear with me.

Love, love, love photography. Have taken several classes and want to get more serious about it this year. My gear: (won't be a comprehensive list 'cause I don't remember all of it and too lazy to go look at it)

Toy cameras:
2 Holga Cameras (gotta love the plastic fantastics)

Medium Format:
Mamiya 645 Pro TL + 2 lenses 150 mm and 80 mm
Hasselblad + 2 lenses 150 mm and 80 mm

35 mm Format:
Nikon D70 (just bought this on E-Bay last November)
Nikon F100
Nikon N90s (bought from one of the photograhers at the photography business where I worked)
50 mm/1.8
180 mm/2/8
75-200(?)/3.5-4.0

1 Vivitar 285 HV flash
2 SB-28 Nikon flashes

That's all I can remember for now.

I highly recommend NIKON DSLR. The sport and you vantage point and the light will factor in the type of lense you should use but stop by your local camera store but try to do some internet research or at least make sure you talk to the oldest person there (not the after school teenager).

Thank you so much for the advice! Yes, I like and trust NIKON. I've spent a lot of time checking on the internet and reading people's rating, but still don't have a clue. You are right! I should go to a local camera store (there is very reputable store in my area) and talk to an expert in person. I admire people taking great photos. I hope someday I could do the same. Thanks again!

My suggestion would be to get a Nikon D60, it's a very capable entry level SLR.

If your main objective is to shoot sports events, you will need a fast zoom lens, something like the versatile 80-400m/4.5-5.6 VR. The vibration reduction works wonders, pretty much eliminates the need for a tripod in most situations. Sadly, that lens is about $1600 alone.

Thank you Vlad! I need to shoot pictures for my kids at the pool who are competitive swimmers, like you used to be. I will get the lens as you suggested. It costs about the same as my BBag , and the time spent with kids are priceless. Thank you so much again!

Awww swimmers! When I remember back at my first swimming lessons at the age of 6, it gives me goose bumps! Such a shame that I ever gave it up, did it competitively for nearly 18 years.

For swimming you'll be a lot in indoor pools with little lighting.

One quintessential lens to get is the 18-200mm VR, it stays on my D300 most of the time and does 90% of the shooting. Its price dropped fortunately a bit, last year you couldn't get 'em anywhere but eBay for a $300 markup.

For indoor swimming events, you probably don't need a 400mm lens. The max you'll be away from your little ones is going to be 5 lanes max at any time, so if size/weight and price aren't an issue, get this one. Probably the best sports lens you can get, it's plenty open along the whole range and super fast.

For the sake of portability though, the 18-200VR will probably be the better choice.

Hi I use a Fugi 645 non-digital which is a medium format camera. I print 16x20 fiber prints and sometimes tone them with sepia. I have a book out Called DELTA LAND if anyone is interested.
http://www.amazon.com/Delta-Author-A...6044637&sr=1-1
For lack of my own web site, I usually ask people to google me (send me a PM cause I don't know if it's kosher to print real names here)
I also have new book coming out called HER CIRCLE, which is portraits taken in low natural light over the last 20 years with my twins lens Rolleiflex. Here is a couple of of those:
I am sorry the quality of not so great on these thumbnails I have attached!! You can see I am certainly no digital whiz. Old fashioned photo with darkroom here. But I love and appreciate digital and am trying to learn more...

In sunny California, they all swim outdoors, and morning practice goes as early as 5:30 a.m. If shooting mainly outdoors, should I stick with 80-400m/4.5-5.6 VR lens as you suggested?

Thanks a million in advance!

Those photos are so pretty! I admire old-fashion photographs since photo taken that way have so much life in there. Going to the darkroom must be very different than plug and print. I am very sad I hardly print images from my computer now since I mostly view them from screen. I miss the time I spent to arrange the photos and albums, which was not too long ago. mmmsc, you have so much talent! And, I am going to buy your book from Amazon. No kidding?! You have a book published and sold on Amazon? Wow! That is amazing!

THanks Hangbag Angel, I am kind of obsessed with photos and the old fashioned making of them. But here is a better (I hope!) quality jpeg of "Sarah's Moment":
