Default Do put leather products on your Spy bags - advice from Fendi Paris!

Hi all

The Fendi store in Paris told me they recommend people using leather protecting products on their Spy Bags (my query) every *6 months*.

They recommend a French brand called 'Poulain' and the 'lait' (milk) not cream.

I thought I should let you all know as there has been much discussion on this topic. Do other Fendi shops do the same and which brands / frequency of application do they recommend?

Best

Fendi in Rome and Fendi in NY both advised me NOT to apply products to my Spies. Even the place I take my Spies for cleaning (used by the Fendi store in NY) advised against it.

Did you speak to a SA or a manager? I wonder if this was official Fendi advice, or advice from a personal perspective of a Fendi employee.

This thread is perfect for me, as I have a question pertaining to it!

I just took one of my Spies to Vegas with me and it got a slight dirt mark on it and another little stain as well. Both are fairly light, but noticable. How should I get them out? I have the Balenciaga Pro cleaner from LMB, is that ok to use? If not then what?

Thanks for the advice!

Fate I called the Paris Fendi shop and spoke I guess to a sales Assistant who gave me the information and then I asked her to double check with other colleagues and also about the product name they use. I was calling as I live in the South and my closest Fendi shop is in Paris and I really can't get my head around not protecting the Spy bag.

To me it looks so fragile, soft and absorbant and I don't want it to be ruined - it seems counter-intuitive to not protect it regularly. I haven't put anything on my bag I am too scared without absolute assurance it is the right thing but at the same time I am too scared to use it on a daily basis too. I can see how easily what happened to Cleo C (I feel for you) can happen with the Spy and I want mine to stay gorgeous and unblemished! I know some people use a brand called Apple on them and I guess this Poulain is similar but European rather than American.

You and Saich2 have obviously been Fendi devotees for longer than me - is the bag protected somewhow by Fendi before they sell them? I mean you mention the Fendi recommended cleaner in NYC - what do they do to the bag when they 'clean' it?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Sac, which spies do you have? The Spy leather treatment has changed over the years, with newer spies being more resistant to color fading/blushing and transferring.

I use Apple Care on my buffalo or calf leather bags, but never on my Spies, as they are nappa leather. Nappa is such a soft, supple leather that it attracts and absorbs chemicals easily -- precisely why I don't use any products on it. Aside from a white acadia spy (not nappa leather) and a gray wisteria that was stained with ink/oil, I've never had stains that could not be removed by the cleaner. I have a white Spy at the cleaners now so when I go pick it up, I'll ask about the cleaning process for you.

If you really are concerned and want to go ahead and use a repellent of some sort, please check to make sure the product does not have wax or wax products -- the worse thing to happen to nappa leather.

Keep us updated!

Cleo -- I've never tried to clean nappa spies by myself, so can't offer help. But I'll be glad to give you my cleaner's number, if you're interested. PM me if you are!

Thanks heaps for your generosity with your expertise Fate. I have a cognac spy bag I think from 2007, it looks uncoated to my inexpert eye but in light it glistens abit like there may be some coating, and its Fendi care tags say 'The leather is lightly treated but its original look is not changed, though it may stain or fade'.

I would appreciate any advice your cleaner could provide thanks a lot for asking it would be great. At the moment it is snuggled up in its bag in my dressing room never having outings while my YSL black patent downtown has all the fun as I feel it is more protected (except for scratches etc which would be lethal touch wood!)

I have some slight blushing and asked an SA at the Galleria Houston what I could use. She said SAs don't like to admit but told me the best cleaner for my spy would be the Coach Leather cleaner. Haven't tried but that is what she advised.
