I've noticed that several of the really hot topics in Health and Fitness are plastic surgery related. I was wondering if it would make sense to move them into a sub-forum, since they're kind of an offshoot from more traditional health and fitness topics. Just a thought. Thanks!

Shhhhhhhh!!!
If it were up for a vote, I'd vote to ban that topic.

I believe there was talk of a separate sub forum before...don't know what the final decision was though. I think it would be a good idea to put them in their own sub-forum as well, don't know if there's enough of them though.

I'm all for a separate sub-forum.

Yes, it was up for discussion before and I think Vlad didn't want to make a separate sub forum for it but perhaps he's change his mind. Doesn't hurt to ask.

Now see what you did? You made me go looking........

Health and Fitness is not about Health and Fitness any more

Health and Fitness subforums?

What's up with all the Asian Rhinoplasty, etc threads?

If the topic is still allowed, I vote for a subforum like True Crime is to Up To The Minute. That way, those that want to read it can, while those who choose to avoid it can. Some don't consider it either Health or Fitness and it's one of the reasons I avoid that whole forum.

Oops, sorry. I missed the previous topics on it (should have searched first - shame on me!! I'm a long-term mod on a local board and I should have known better than to post without searching.)

I've looked through those previous threads that were referenced, and I don't think I have a hugely new perspective to add. I am not against elective surgery (am contemplating a breast enhancement but am probably too terrified to go through with it, plus I worry about how I'd explain it to my DD one day), but I just feel like these threads are a bit "off" for Health & Fitness, since they're not about someone taking care of herself.

While I understand that there aren't a huge number of threads that would belong in the sub-forum, the plastic surgery threads are very popular and stay up at the top most of the time, meaning that people have to scroll through them all to get to the other topics, which is why I brought the possibility up [again].

I have to say as someone that fairly-newly has dipped into the Health and Fitness sub forum, I was stunned by all the threads and posts on elective and plastic surgery, firstly because it doesn't have much to do with health or fitness and secondly because it makes the subject look normalised as part of thinking about appearance. I too would support a separation of subject matter by section.

We will discuss this with the team and see about it - but I think this might be a great idea and needed!

I know I am probably in the minority here, and I have voiced my opinion before, but I am strongly against allowing plastic surgery topics on this forum, especially since so many members are under 18. We don't need to actively contribute to anyone thinking they need to undergo multiple procedures to look a certain way and to encourage others to do so. And I certainly don't want to start seeing ads for surgeons popping up on the site. Unfortunately, there are too many people on this site who will need to say it's OK since they've had procedures themselves and won't want to look like hypocrites.

This is the Purse Forum, not the Plastic Surgery Forum.

I've been counting the last couple of days, and there are currently 12 plastic surgery related topics on the front page of Health and Fitness (note: some topics are sneaky, like the one on making calves thinner -- I don't think it originated w/r/t surgery but exercise, and now it's morphed into this thread that completely freaked me out where people are having calf muscle surgically removed to make their legs look thinner!!! This was part of why I raised the request. I think that people see all these surgical threads and think that's the focus.) The fewest I have seen in the last week or so on the front page is 10. This is about double what I saw mentioned in the previous threads.

Yup, I just went there and winced at the front page, like going in to a gym and finding yourself in the butchers

I honestly don't think that plastic surgery is any worse than wearing lots of makeup, so we might as well ban that section as well. Nowadays the technology for surgeries is safe enough for people who get it (unless they go overboard or go to an unlicensed doctor) so I really don't see a difference between, say, getting laser treatment for better skin vs. wearing foundation every day to cover up spots. And no, I've never had any procedures done, although I've thought about it and did some research in the past, and I also don't wear makeup.

I'm not trying to start an argument, I'm curious what you find so wrong about surgery - some people are not confident about certain parts of their bodies and rather than spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on therapy, they just spend a few thousand fixing it. Why not? The idea that you will then get addicted to surgery or that you will find some other part of yourself that you want to change might apply to some but probably not most of the people who decide to get surgery.

I think it's easy to take a stand against something like plastic surgery if you can't see the psychology behind someone who really wants it.
