Instructions for using Windows Alt Codes

Alt codes work on computers running any of Microsoft's Windows operating systems.
  1. Find the Alt Code you need from the alt code tables on this site or from the downloadable Alt Code list.
  2. Make sure that "Number Lock" is switched on.
    There should be a light on your keyboard indicating this.
    If not, press the "Number Lock" key at the top left of the numeric keypad.
  3. Hold down the "Alt" key to the left of the space bar and key the code on the numeric keypad.
    Don't release the "Alt" key until after you've typed the alt code. When you release it you should see the special character you include.

Thanks, RoseMary, for the instructions!! It just doesn't seem to work on my computer, but it may be because of my language setting. I will just use the copy and paste technique!!

For those using Windows that say it won't work, it might have something to do with the language, font or character map settings. Try this;

From the Start Menu, click "All Programs", then "Accessories", then "System Tools", then "Character Map". Once that displays, check the dropdown box called "Character Set" and see if it says "Unicode". Set the font to "Arial" in the font dropdown box, then scroll through the display and see if you can see the heart and other symbols.

I can see the heart in Arial, but not Verdana, so if you have your browser font settings changed from default you might not be able to see certain special characters.
