Default Your experiences with EMS

I know nothing about EMS except that it seems to be a service provided by some Asian countries and pretty expensive. Is it like DHL? Is it generally pretty safe? Do you still buy insurance on it like you would for USPS/Royal Mail etc? Any nightmare stories?

Sorry if this has been posted - search function is down.

EMS is the international traceable express mail service - most countries have some variation on the same thing - in the US I think it's called Global Express Mail. It's mail as opposed to a courier service, and because of that it seems to have a better chance of getting through customs without having duty assessed.

I only use EMS to ship outside Australia as it is fully trackable and really fast..I have only bought insurance once and that was because the buyer had private feedback..

Other than that, my buyers have been comfortable with me shipping to them w/out insurance.. :)

All I have to say is MAKE SURE YOU GET IT SCANNED AT THE POST OFFICE!! Even if they say it gets scanned at the hub or whatever... tell them you need proof it was dropped off.

The ONLY time I have had a package go missing is when it wasn't scanned in!

Other then that... EMS goes by the post office but is a very good, affordable service.

EMS is the best service that asian post offices give....there are restrictions on what you can send though (like jewelry and watches) which u can send via the second choice would be global priority mail which takes a bit longer

its cheaper...DHL or fedex are way to expensive...

EMS is headquartered in Berne, Switzerland as far as I know and its services are provided by every country's national postal service. In US it's carried by USPS. It has to be reliable or your country's own postal service won't be using it!

Instead of being a private business it is a co-op, therefore its prices are kept low.

Here is their website.

Thanks for everyone's comments, really appreciated! What does it mean to get the item scanned at the post office? Is that what I have to do as a buyer? As a seller? Please clarify

EMS is equivalent to your US USPS Global Express.

It's basically the same thing (tracking and insurance via the USPS website). Just a different name in other countries

In Australia, it's now called ECI, but it used to be called EMS
HK is called Speedpost
Japan and Taiwan i think it's still called EMS

It is an Express service that is offered by each countries local postal service

Hope that makes sense

Edit: As a SELLER, you fill out the EMS or USPS Global Express Forms, and take it to the Post office with your Parcel. Once paid for etc, the post office will scan the parcel as being accepted, then you can give the BUYER, the tracking # thats on the Global Express form, and they can track the parcel via the USPS website, and their own country's postal website.

Thanks for all your help!

Is $45 shipping for something the size of an LV speedy 30 from Indonesia to the UK reasonable, in your opinion?

I've also had nothing but good experiences with EMS packages from Japan. I even got one delivered on a Sunday! It is more expensive; I usually paid between 35 and 50 for shipping, but it comes fast and I never had anything get lost. Also, I was told that EMS is automatically insured, so I never paid any extra for insurance.
