Default What to do about scam buyer?
Ok, so I put an expensive (non-purse) item up for auction on ebay. The item sold for $430 by a first time buyer who had literally just signed up that day. Well, I verified right after that invoice address was U.S. and it was, so i thought ok-maybe it's a legitamite buyer. The next morning I find an email from the buyer saying "im so glad i won your auction! I will pay $100 shipping. how do i pay?!" Well of course, i immediately knew I was being scammed. I was planning on just going 7 days and reporting the buyer as non-paying and doing a second chance offer, until the buyer tried to scam me via paypal. They sent me an email saying "Your money has been transferred from ___ account for item, please send us tracking number and we will transfer you the funds". I forwarded the email to Paypal who confirmed it was a spoof email, but I'm trying to decide what to do? Do i wait to contact ebay? How, etc?"

Any advice would be appreciated yall!

I would call Ebay and see how to proceed.

yes, contact ebay that paypal confirmed the payment was never sent and was in fact a spoof email. and you can cancel the transaction and get your fees back. also block that bidder for future.

I had a scamming buyer like that before - even saying the same thing with the shipping - offering to pay $100 even though I had in the listing it was only like $20 or something - and they did a buy it now and it was back when it took me 30 days to be able to relist as it was a designer item - it was incredibly frustrating - I am convinced they did it so that my item was no longer listed as they had a similar item to list or something like that. . . so annoying and ebay did absolutely nothing to help me! At least the NPB process is quicker now

What is the point of offering $100 for shipping? I am confused.

Wow good job!! I totally would not have realized it was a scammer. I'm glad you caught them in the act!

It's akin (or maybe is) that Nigerian scam - where they offer you x-times over the amount for your shipping. Or they ask you to overcharge them and you keep the "change." I don't know how many scams they have, but somehow the overcharge for shipping is one of them

Contact ebay and smart to forward that spoof e-mail.

Yeah, a scammer in the works but not going to get her item.

I contacted Ebay to let them know the situation and they haven't done anything. I also forwarded Paypal both fake emails, and sent one back saying yes, it was a spoof, and the other I "needed to contact C.S. for assistance with my account"-I couldn't believe that! I was like "you really need help determining that it's fake? Did you even look at it? Misspellings, etc. Oh well.

Anyways, I'm glad I caught on because apparently this guy has won 8 other auctions and is still going! My 4 days is up tomorrow, so hopefully I can file with Ebay and get them kicked off.

They make you think you're getting an even better deal, so you're happy to ship it out ASAP, without realizing it's a scam. It's pretty pathetic. The worst part was that they were way off on the conversion! They said paypal did $530 GBP (which is like $850 bucks or so) equaled $430 U.S. dollars.

Good luck and keep us posted. I think Ebay Trust and Safety meant you probably need to change our password in case the scammer got any of your info from the spoof attempt.
