Default What is a Private Auction

And, how is it even legal? I am looking for a certain Hermes scarf and I check the new listings frequently and I found this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/PRIVATE-AUCTION-...QQcmdZViewItem
It's like discrimination. I thought it was a little strange, and then I searched for some more private auctions. I figure it's a way to play by eBay's rules, but it seems like it would make more sense to contact the bidder and sell as a BIN at an arranged time. I had to do that once. I didn't want to screw up my reputation on eBay. How can this be allowed? I tried to email eBay, but there is no way to ask them about this particular topic. I figured you all would be the best resource.
Thanks,

Yes, its allowed as far as I know. I've done it a few times before as its cheaper than listing as BIN. The seller can set his/her terms for selling, including who can/cannot bid (unless its discrimination based on gender/race/etc).

Yes, I think it is allowed.

I've asked sellers before if they have stocked bags in other colors/styles that they have not yet listed, or if they can find certain bags for me. then the sellers would list items just for me if we can agree on prices and conditions.

You have to pay extra listing fee if you wanna put a BIN price on your item. I don't think it costs much tho.

It doesnt save a whole lot in this particular auction (maybe a couple bucks at the most). When I did it last time (about a year or so ago), I started the auction with bid price of 99 cents and a BIN option on the side for the actual amount (which was about $ 6.5 K). When you do that, you only pay the basic listing fee and a BIN fee of 25 cents and you ended up saving about $10 or so on high priced stuff. I just used that amount to buy some Godiva chocolates for the buyer and mail it separately as thank you gift. Better use of money and got me a glowing feedback

I'd rather my buyers get some extra stuff than evilbay make more money off of me.
