Default We aren't the only ones getting screwed....

Hi all-

I don't think Buy.com sells handbags so I don't think this directly affects us (those that sell hangbags) but look at how the electronic sellers are getting screwed as well.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/14/te...l?ref=business

I personally believed that eBay's value was in second-hand, sales merchandise through auctions and fixed sales prices. If more and more companies come in with their merchandise at a lower price with free shipping will the small seller be obsolete? Although I suppose this means that Buy.com is getting more exposure, but seriously, isn't eBay just becoming a marketplace like Amazon?

Do ANY of us imagine that companies that sell handbags (might be Macy's and not necessarily Coach, etc..) will start selling on eBay as well?

It does remind of when Wal-mart hit the scene. I am actually old enough to remember Montgomery Ward, Roses, Zayers(sp?), and the local retailers. Buy.com with their lower prices will probably do away with the little people, then once all the competition is gone, they will slowly raise their prices.

I am not very old but I do remember Montgomery Ward. However, we still have two companies that may suffer the same fate now (Sears and Radio Shack). Walmart and BestBuy are putting everyone out of business.

Circuit City is about to file bankruptcy because they can't compete.

It is just sad.... cause I HATE BestBuy.

Wow. I did not know that. It's getting ridiculous how these Big Box stores are wiping away the competition, when it didn't used to be like that years ago. It was fair game. That's like saying that only McDonald's will be left standing and Burger King, Wendy's, Carl's Jr. will all be wiped away, and the world will be left with no choice.

That's just sad. We're all going to turn into a bunch of clones!

It is sad and scary. I actually remember when Wal-Mart used to promote "buy american" and most of their clothing and shoe products were American made

That really makes me sad, as I LOVE eBay for finding cool stuff that otherwise I simply can't get otherwise. But, ebay isn't the only place for small sellers. Several other websites have sprung up and I'm sure more are on the way. There is www.malleries.com, www.ecrater.com, rubylane, etc..., so I think (hope!) that something will come along.

I have heard that eBay's new focus is to be more like Amazon. Their goal is to drive away all of the small sellers. Quite honestly I think it will ultimately be their demise. We already have an Amazon and don't need a new one. eBay is not going to be able to pull this off.

ITA! I consider myself to be a very savvy buyer. Before I buy something on eBay I check ALL other avenues (for electronics/DVDs). I don't need all the small sellers on eBay to disappear leaving me with less options.

Prime example: just bought a digital camera for $212 that was selling at CircuitCity for $350. When I got it I realized it was an import (because of the charger) but still an EXCELLENT deal. I really hope eBay doesn't put Amazon out of business.

I agree.

I honestly think that this will only HURT them, not help their business. I think once the stockholders/shareholders realize this, they will get rid of this Donahoe schmuck and hire a new CEO. Because to me, he is hurting eBay, not helping them. I know they said any publicity is better than none, but all of the publicity they're getting is strictly negative. How is this a good thing for business?

I was going to post the same type of thing. There will always be a place for smaller sellers at niche sites and other auction sites that may be smaller now but will emerge if eBay goes to big box hell.

True buyers want bargains, but buyers also want products that are no longer in production, vintage items, antiques, and the odd and unusual. There is a reason we look for it on eBay now...because these big box sellers or department stores do not have the items.

I do not think eBay is going to put Amazon out of business. I know when I am going to look for a new item such as books, music, electronics, and toys I generally check Amazon first. I have a Prime account with them so I always get free shipping. If I find the item I will double price check around a bit but usually go back to Amazon to purchase because the price if often the same or lower and the free shipping is the kicker.

ITA, Jemi! I believe that eBay offers items you simply cannot find elsewhere.

I despise BestBuy. Their prices are not all that great, and their return policy is almost nonexistent. I refuse to shop there.
